Lancaster Stormers News Release

Denny Almonte singled home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Sugar Land Skeeters to a 3-1 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Friday evening at Constellation Field.

It was the second straight win for the Skeeters in the season-opening series in Texas.

Kevin Russo began the home eighth with a sharp single to the left of shortstop Lance Zawadzki. Delwyn Young sent a screamer between the legs of lefty Zach Jackson (0-1). Yusuke Kajimoto was positioned perfectly up the middle and handled the hot grounder and looked to start the fifth double play of the night for Lancaster's middle infielder. His underhanded toss was bobbled by Zawadzki, and the Barnstormers failed to get an out anywhere. Travis Scott advanced the runners with a bunt. Butch Hobson stuck with Jackson to face Almonte, who had been 0-for-7 with five strikeouts on the season.

Almonte delivered, lining a single into right field on the first pitch of the at bat. Sugar Land produced an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to deep right by Chris Wallace off Scott Patterson.

Wallace had provided Sugar Land with a lead on a line drive home run inside the left field foul pole on Dan Osterbrock's second pitch of the fifth inning. Zawadzki countered with an opposite field blast in the top of the sixth on the first pitch thrown by Derek Blacksher on the evening.

Osterbrock fired 4 2/3 innings, yielding four hits and a walk while striking out two. His mound opponent, fellow lefty Matt Maloney, yielded one hit and one walk in five frames. Maloney struck out four.

John Lujan (1-0) notched the win after stranding a pair of Barnstormers in the eighth. Adrian Martin, another former Camden closer, picked up the save despite David Cooper's leadoff single in the ninth.

Newcomer P.J. Walters will make the start for Lancaster Saturday evening at 6:05 CDT against Sugar Land veteran Matt Wright. Fans may tune in at 6:45 EDT to 1390-AM, WLAN, 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app.
