York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution were shut down by Long Island ace John Brownell in their season opener, falling to the Ducks 5-2 in front of 4,951 fans at Santander Stadium on a chilly Friday night in downtown York. The Revs will look to even things in the second game of the new season when they host the Ducks on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Brownell (1-0) dominated early, striking out the side in order in the first inning to begin the season. The right-hander would retire each of his first 12 batters faced, and 16 of his first 17, carrying a no-hitter through 5.1 innings.

Desmond Henry broke up the no-hit bid with a broken-bat single to right with one out in the sixth, but Brownell would only surrender one other knock, an infield single by Wilson Valdez in the seventh, as last year's league-leader in innings and strikeouts picked up where he left off, lasting seven impressive frames over a 93-pitch effort.

Long Island grabbed an early edge, scoring a first inning run right out of the gate. Bryan Sabatella led off the season with a single through the left side of the infield and stole second. Following a walk to Erik Komatsu, both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Lew Ford took advantage with an RBI groundout to plate the season's first run.

Revs starter Shawn Hill (0-1) retired nine of his final ten batters faced, and allowed just one run over three innings but suffered the loss.

The Ducks padded the lead on a two-run homer to right field by Jon Griffin in the top of the fourth, and a solo home run to left-center from Cody Puckett leading off the sixth. Ford would add a sac fly to right in the seventh as Long Island's lead grew to 5-0.

The Revs broke up the shut out with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as Brandon Boggs legged out an RBI infield single with two outs. The base hit plated Bryan Pounds who had led off the inning with a walk, as well as Brandon Jones who had singled earlier in the inning, as Jones crossed the plate after a throwing error by second baseman Blake Davis on the play.

Ryan Kussmaul closed it out with a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save.

Notes: York falls to 5-4 all-time on Opening Day, 3-2 at home. The Revs have opened at home in five of the last six seasons. It is the first time York and Long Island have met on Opening Night. Catcher Salvador Paniagua made his fourth Opening Day start for the Revs, tying pitcher Corey Thurman for the Revs all-time lead, and establishing the all-time mark by a position player. The game-time temperature of 57 degrees marked the second coldest on a season-opener in franchise history, behind the 55-degree temperature in Bridgeport in 2009; it tied the coldest in a home opener along with the 2008 home opener. York's Anthony Lerew will face Long Island's Mark Rogers on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The first 1,500 fans receive a magnet schedule giveaway presented by The Law Firm of Dale E. Anstine. The night concludes with Postgame Fireworks presented by FlipSidePA. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
