Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS- The Sugar Land Skeeters rode another strong performance by the pitching staff and a two-RBI performance from Chris Wallace to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers, 3-1, in front of 5,561 fans at Constellation Field. With the win, the Skeeters improve to 2-0 on the season while the Barnstormers fall to 0-2. For the second night in a row, the pitching staff for the Skeeters held the Barnstormers in check, surrendering just one run and five hits over nine innings of work. Matt Maloney had a stellar first outing for Sugar Land after pitching last season for the Somerset Patriots. The southpaw went 5.0 shutout innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk while striking out four. Derek Loop, John Lujan and Adrian Martin combined to yield just two hits and one walk over the final three innings to keep Lancaster off the scoreboard.

The Skeeters utilized their first home run of the season on a solo-shot from Chris Wallace down the left field line to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth off Lancaster starter Dan Osterbrock. The catcher paced the offense for Sugar Land with a pair of RBI.

After Maloney's strong performance, Derek Blacksher surrendered a home run to Lance Zawadzki in the top of the sixth to tie the game at one. Blacksher limited just the home run in the inning, dancing out of having a pair of runners on base with a flyout and a sharp grounder back to the pitcher.

Lujan (W, 1-0) worked around trouble in the eighth after a two-out walk and a single into right put runners on the corners for the Barnstormers. The left-hander got a groundball to second for the final out to snuff out the potential rally.

With the momentum in the home dugout, Kevin Russo led off the bottom of the eighth with a single before advancing to second on a failed fielder's choice attempt. Barnstormers shortstop Zawadzki was unable to corral the throw from second basemen, Yusuke Kajimoto, allowing Delwyn Young to reach first. Travis Scott laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Denny Almonte recorded his first hit of the season with a frozen rope into right, plating Russo for the go-ahead run. Sugar Land added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Wallace for his second RBI of the night, pushing across Young to move the score to 3-1.

Martin (Sv. 1) surrendered a leadoff single into the right field alley, but a 6-4-3 double play erased the threat. Almonte capped off the night with a diving catch in center for the final out to preserve the 3-1 win and give Martin the save.

The Skeeters continue the eight-game homestand tomorrow against Lancaster at 6:05 p.m. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the first 2,000 fans will receive Skeeters' hats, courtesy MemberSource Credit Union.
