Lancaster Stormers News Release

First came the errors and bunts. Then came the hits.

By the time it all stopped, the Lancaster Barnstormers had put six runs on the board in the top of the 10th and defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 8-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The victory kept the Barnstormers five games ahead of the York Revolution in the Freedom Division race. Both teams have 13 games left in the first half.

Emerson Frostad hit a ground ball that came up on shortstop Kevin Rios for an error to open the 10th inning. Ryan Harvey's bunt to the third base side of the mound eluded Jim Ed Warden's grasp for a base hit. Brad Boyer bunted back toward the mound. Warden (2-5) tried to force Frostad at third, but his bounced past Matt Padgett down the left field line, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Kody Kirkland laid down a third consecutive bunt. Warden again attempted a force play at third, but his throw was late, loading the bases.

The Blue Crabs tightened the infield against Adam Godwin, but the Lancaster center fielder scorched a two-run single off the glove of second baseman Casey Benjamin as the Barnstormers jumped ahead, 5-2. Fehlandt Lentini bounced a single up the middle to add one more, and Terry Tiffee contributed a third straight hit for a 7-2 edge. Lentini also scampered home with the sixth run as Tiffee's single bounced away from right fielder Mike Daniel before James Baker, the sixth Blue Crabs pitcher, got it under control.

Jeremy Owens countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth. Southern Maryland loaded the bases afterward, but Casey Benjamin was retired on a crisp one-hopper to Boyer to end the night.

The Blue Crabs had taken an early 2-0 lead. Daniel walked on four pitches to lead off the game, advanced on an error and bunt single and crossed on Matt Padgett's force play grounder. A triple by Daniel opened the third. He scored on a grounder by Chin Lung Hu.

Starter Dwayne Pollok retired 14 of the last 15 batters that he faced, keeping Lancaster in the game. Meanwhile, Deinys Suarez carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the sixth. Godwin broke the spell with a single to left, and Lentini followed with a nearly identical base hit. Suarez retired Tiffee on a pop up to shortstop for the second out. Blake Gailen worked the count to 3-2 then doubled to left center, driving in both runners to tie the game.

Beau Vaughan (2-0) got the final two outs in the ninth to earn the win.

The series continues on Tuesday evening at 7:05. Alan Johnson (4-4) will make the start for Lancaster against Southern Maryland right-hander Nick Green.

NOTES: In five games at Southern Maryland this season, the Barnstormers have scored only six runs before the ninth inning but 13 afterward...Lancaster is 6-2 against the Blue Crabs overall...The bunt single in the 10th extended Harvey's hitting streak to seven...Pollok has allowed only two earned runs on 13 hits in 23 innings over four starts.
