Barnstormers Fall Again

September 6, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster could not overcome an early deficit and fell to the Long Island Ducks, 6-5, in front of 4,262 Sunday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the loss, the Barnstormers dropped 6 ½ games behind the Ducks and seven behind Newark in the wild card race.

Juan Francia had three hits, including a double and a triple, and Freddie Thon went 5-for-5 in the Ducks win. Francia opened the game with a line drive to center that was misjudged by Michael Woods and skipped to the warning track in center for his double. Matt Cavagnaro beat out a bunt single, and, after Ray Navarrete popped out to first, George Lombard hit into a force play to drive home a run as the Ducks grabbed a 1-0 edge.

Lancaster threw a counterpunch in the bottom of the inning with two-out RBI singles by Aaron Herr and Matt Watson for a 2-1 advantage, but a one-out walk to catcher Robert Sandora brought the Ducks back to left in the second. Dennis Donovan placed a perfect hit-and-run single into right field, chasing Sandora to third. Francia drilled a ball to left center that sailed past Woods for a two-run triple. Cavagnaro bounced a single over the drawn-in infield, and the Ducks took the lead to stay at 4-2.

Again, Lancaster bounced back against Randy Leek (10-9). Gerard Haran led off the third with a long double to left. He stole third, and rode home when Vic Gutierrez doubled down the left field line. However, after Gutierrez moved to third on a bunt, he was stranded there with the tying run.

Thon lined a single off the right field wall and took third on Johnny Hernandez' double into the left field corner. Jason Cooper bobbled Estee Harris' ground ball as a run scored. Hernandez also crossed as Sandora bounced into a 1-6-3 double play as Long Island grabbed a 6-3 advantage.

Parker fired three scoreless innings afterward, and the bullpen added three more, keeping Lancaster in the game. The Barnstormers cut one run off the Ducks lead in the bottom of the third on a walk to Herr and double down the left field line by Matt Watson.

The same duo combined again in the seventh inning. Herr cracked a long double to center off reliever Drew Shetrone, and Watson looped a single to left off Jason Norderum to drive him home as Lancaster pulled within one.

Joe Valentine survived a two-out single by Suarez in the eighth. Bill Simas only allowed a one-out walk to Jason Cooper in the ninth for his 23rd save.

The homestand continues on Monday with a 1:30 start against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Jason Scobie (7-8) will make the start against Jarrett Grube (3-1). The Barnstormers are offering an all-you-can-eat package for $15.

NOTES: Watson has hit safely in six straight (10-for-22)...Herr drove in his 70th run...Suarez is batting .389 in his last 11 games...Lancaster lost 16 of 20 against Long Island this season.
