Patriots Complete Sweep Of Blue Crabs

WALDORF , MD- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-3 in front of 4,191 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Sunday evening.

Somerset struck first with a run in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead when first baseman Joe Burke reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a Blue Crabs' throwing error and scored on a one out RBI single to center by designated hitter Travis Anderson.

The Patriots added two runs in the top of the third inning to make it a 3-0 lead. Somerset loaded the bases on a lead off walk by shortstop Anthony Granato, a hit-and-run single to right by rightfielder Mike Rodriguez and a one out walk by catcher Jason Belcher. Second baseman Teuris Olivares then hit an RBI fielder's choice to shortstop that plated Granato and Burke drove in Rodriguez with a two out RBI single to right.

Southern Maryland got an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Patriots' lead to 3-1 when first baseman Ken Harvey hit a lead off double to right center and scored on a two base Patriots' throwing error on a ground ball to shortstop.

Somerset plated a pair of runs in top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Granato ripped a two out double off the right field wall and scored when Rodriguez lined an RBI single to right. After Rodriguez stole second, Nettles followed with an RBI single to left.

The Blue Crabs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 5-2 when Shanks led off with a single to center and after a ground out, scored on a one out RBI single to left center by designated hitter Michael Tucker.

The Patriots responded by scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 6-2 when Olivares drew a lead off walk, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single to left by centerfielder Sean Smith.

Somerset scored their final run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-2 lead when Nettles slugged a one out solo home run (13) to left.

Southern Maryland plated their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it 7-3 when centerfielder Jeremy Owens hit a lead off solo home run (28) to left center.

Patriots' starter Brian Adams (13-6) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five and walking three in six innings of work. Blue Crabs' starter Ryan Bicondoa (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits while walking five and striking one in six innings pitched.

With the win the Patriots improved to 34-21 in the second half and 77-48 overall while the Blue Crabs dropped to 31-23 and 73-51 overall.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on Monday, September 7th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for 6:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
