
Patriots pound Blue Crabs, 11-4

WALDORF , MD- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 11-4 in front of 5,121 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Saturday evening.
Somerset struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead when third baseman Jeff Nettles crushed a one out two run home run (12) to left after shortstop Anthony Granato drew a lead off walk.
Southern Maryland got a run back in the bottom of the first to cut the Patriots' lead to 2-1 when leftfielder James Shanks hit a one out double off the left field wall and scored on an RBI double into the right field corner by third baseman Patrick Osborn.
The Patriots added two runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 4-1. Granato led off with a broken bat single to left and came around to score when rightfielder Mike Rodriguez ripped an RBI double down the right field line. After Rodriguez stole third, Nettles drove him in with an RBI sacrifice fly to right.
Somerset plated three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Granato hit a one out bunt single up the third base line, stole second and after a walk by Rodriguez, stole third. Nettles then ripped a two run single to left that scored Granato and Rodriguez. After a ground out, catcher Jason Belcher drove in Nettles with a two out RBI single to center.
The Blue Crabs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Patriots' lead to 7-4. Osborn led off with a triple to right center and scored on RBI single to right center by first baseman Michael Tucker. Designated hitter Ken Harvey then hit an RBI double to right center to plate Tucker and later in the inning Harvey would score on a double play ground ball.
The Patriots plated their final four runs in the top of the ninth inning to make it 11-4. Second baseman Teuris Olivares drew a one out walk, moved to second on a single to left by Belcher and scored on an RBI single to center by first baseman Travis Anderson. Leftfielder Joe Burke then lined an RBI double off the left field wall to plate Belcher. After a ground out, centerfielder Sean Smith hit an RBI infield single to shortstop that scored Anderson and on the same play, Burke would scamper home on a Blue Crabs' throwing error.
Patriots' starter Jim Magrane (14-4) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking three in seven innings of work. Blue Crabs' starter Randy Keisler (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits while walking two and striking three in three innings pitched. Patriots' reliever Casey Cahill pitched the final two scoreless innings to collect his second save of the season.
With the win the Patriots improved to 33-21 in the second half and 76-48 overall while the Blue Crabs dropped to 31-22 and 73-50 overall.
