Lancaster Stormers News Release
Two-run doubles by Juan Apodaca and Brian Cavazos-Galvez keyed big innings on Friday night as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Long Island Ducks, 7-5, at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win was Lancaster's 45th of the second half, tying the most by a Barnstormers team in a half, matching the 2012 squad's first half.
Lancaster jumped out to a 3-0 lead off John Brownell (12-6) in the second. Cavazos-Galvez led off with a walk and took third on a Luke Hughes single to right. Anderson Feliz rolled a single into the hole at shortstop to score one, and Apodaca followed with a wicked line drive down the left field line to get two more across.
The Ducks whittled one off the lead in the fourth as Lew Ford's line drive double over third baseman Anderson Feliz' head scored Delta Cleary, Jr. Elmer Reyes added a two-out single to left, but Kent Matthes fired a perfect strike to Apodaca to nail Ford trying to score the second run of the inning.
Long Island struck again in the fifth on three consecutive two-out singles off Madison Boer (4-3). Ford drove in the run with a roller up the third base line. Feliz' desperation throw was a shade late and trickled away from first baseman Mike McDade as Fehlandt Lentini charged home.
The Barnstormers were able to pull away from Brownell in the fifth. Matthes doubled to left with one out. After McDade popped to short, Lance Zawadzki was hit by a pitch. Cavazos-Galvez hooked a drive away from Cleary in left to score two. Luke Hughes blasted a long double to right center for another run, and he scored on Feliz' lined single high off the right field wall.
Cody Puckett added a two-run homer in the sixth, and Ford drove home a run with a ground out in the seventh before Mark Lamm and Marcus Walden took care of the Ducks over the final two innings. Walden earned his 15th save.
Chad Beck (4-3) will take the mound for the Barnstormers on Saturday against right-hander Bobby Blevins (4-4). Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: The Barnstormers are a perfect 5-0 on the homestand...Apodaca has 13 RBI in his last 15 games...Matthes has hit safely in 15 of 17 (24-65, .369)...Zawadzki's home run margin over Cavazos-Galvez and Sugar Land's Chris Wallace remained at two...The Barnstormers are 7-3 at home against Long Island on the season but only 1-7 at Bethpage Ballpark.
