Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT- September 18, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (29-38, 55-82) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (26-42, 68-70) 2-0 in the second of a four game series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday night. The Bluefish are shutout in a ballgame for the ninth time on the season.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Anderson (2-2) suffered the loss despite a very impressive performance, tossing six and one-third innings, giving up one run on three hits, striking out five and not issuing a walk. The rookie right hander registered his second consecutive quality start and fourth overall in just seven appearances on the mound. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres (8-9) picked up the win with seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. Cody Eppley worked around three hits surrendered in the home half of the ninth inning for his ninth save of the season and second in as many nights.

Each team was held without a run during this pitcher's duel until the top half of the fifth inning, when Southern Maryland cracked the scoreboard first off Anderson. Craig Maddox launched an opposite field triple to open up the frame, his second three-base hit and third hit for extra bases in the series. Jamar Walton would bring home Maddox with the game's first run on a sacrifice fly, and the visitors were up 1-0. Burres retired the first 13 batters he faced on the evening before Andres Rodriguez would reach on a base knock with one out in the fifth, but the southpaw retired the next two Bluefish hitters to hang on to the one-run cushion.

Southern Maryland added a much needed unearned insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a two-out, run scoring double off the bat of Walton, plating Maddox who reached on an infield single and advanced to second after a throwing error by Bluefish second baseman Juan Martinez, and just like that the Blue Crabs were up 2-0. Eppley came on once again to close the game out, but Bridgeport would not go down without a fight. Luis Rodriguez and Matt Burns reached on back to back singles to begin the rally. Josh Prince picked up a base knock with one out, and three 'Fish were on the pond for All-Star Welington Dotel. The comeback would fall just short as Eppley induced Dotel to ground into a game ending around the horn double play, and the Blue Crabs breathed a sigh of relief as they were able to hang on for the victory. Burns led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits.

The Bluefish continue the final series of the regular season with the 2015 First Half Freedom Division Champion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday, September 19th as the organization honors the accomplishments of Luis Lopez by retiring his number 19 jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 P.M. followed by a spectacular post-game 3D Fireworks show presented by Family Vision Centers.
