Barnstormers continue to reel

August 26, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

A check swing infield single by Larry Barnes in the eighth inning sent the Lancaster Barnstormers reeling to their fifth straight loss, 5-2, Saturday evening at Commerce Bank Park in Bridgewater, NJ.

With the loss, the Barnstormers' lead in the Southern Division has been sliced to 1 games over the charging Atlantic City Surf. Camden, which also won Saturday night is only two back, and Somerset trails by five.

With one out in the eighth, Henri Stanley drew a walk off Todd Pennington (0-1). Pennington retired Nick Ortiz on a pop up and had Barnes at 0-2 when everything crumbled. Stanley broke for second, and the throw from Lance Burkhart tailed away from Danny Gonzalez allowing Stanley to reach third. Barnes worked the count to 3-2 but appeared to be beaten. His dribbler got past Pennington to the third base side, and Gonzalez was unable to get off a throw in time to retire Barnes as the Patriots grabbed the 3-2 lead.

Pennington then walked Edgard Clemente and hit Travis Anderson with a pitch to load the bases. Jim Burt pushed a 3-2 pitch into right center to drive in two more and put the game away.

Early, it looked like the Barnstormers were poised to break out of a four-day long batting slump. Reggie Taylor homered on the game's second pitch by spot starter Jeff Urban. Then, in the second inning, Lancaster loaded the bases on singles by Keith Maxwell and Chris Van Rossum around a walk to Jutt Hileman. Burkhart hit a deep fly to center to score the Barnstormers' second run and move Hileman to third. Urban battled back to strike out Kris Dufner and get Taylor on a pop up to close the inning. Lancaster did not get another runner into scoring position until the seventh, and no other Barnstormer reached third for the remainder of the game.

Cam Smith carried a two-hit shutout for 5 1/3 innings, aided by a pair of double plays. Somerset finally got to him in the sixth as Patrick Boran singled and stole second. Stanley walked, and Ortiz grounded a single up the middle to cut the lead to 2-1. Barnes flied to deep center with Stanley taking third. He scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Smith left after seven innings, yielding five hits and the two runs. He walked two and struck out two, both in the first inning. The right-hander also hit two batters on the night.

Todd Moser (6-6) replaced Urban in the sixth and tossed three shutout innings for the win. Erick Almonte worked the ninth for his 10th save.
