
Riversharks take bite out of Bears

NEWARK, NJ - Camden Riversharks first baseman Alejandro Friere doubled in the top of the tenth inning scoring left-fielder Denny Abreu, who led off the inning with an infield single, to defeat the Newark Bears 4-3 Saturday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
After trailing 3-1, the Bears came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Catcher Victor Valencia scored on an RBI groundout by second baseman Matt Brunson and right-fielder Nick Steppe ripped a two-out RBI single to right field scoring center-fielder Anthony Sanders.
The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Steppe hit a sacrifice fly scoring shortstop Jack Santora, however in the top of the fifth inning Riversharks shortstop Shaun Skrehot hit a two-run double to left center field, and a solo home run over the left center field wall in the top of the seventh to give the Riversharks the 3-1 lead.
Sanders led the Bears offense going 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored, while Steppe finished 1-for-2 with a single, two sacrifices, and two RBI. Skrehot led the Riversharks ending the game 2-for-5 including his fourth home run of the season, and three RBI.
Joey Cole (3-2) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning, while Mark Ion (2-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings allowing only one hit. Chris Fussell picked up his 17th save of the season with a perfect tenth inning. Bears starter Pat Daneker received a no decision in his first appearance since coming off the disabled list throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits striking out four, and Riversharks starter Greg Powell also received a no decision pitching seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out five.
The Bears and Riversharks will play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with game one set to begin at 1:35 pm. Joe Gannon (6-7) will take the mound in game one for the Bears against Mark DiFelice (8-4) for the Riversharks. Mike Cosgrove (0-2) will start game two for Newark, while Jon McDonald (8-4) takes the hill for Camden. Gates open at 12:35 pm to a Ruppert Bobblehead giveaway to the first 750 children presented by Haberman Building Corporation, and a pre-game performance by Polka Dot. As part of the Family Fun Day Sundays at The Den, all fans have the opportunity to participate in a pre-game autograph session presented by Home Remodelers Group, and children 14 and under run the bases after the game.
