
Patriots beat Barnstormers with three-run eighth inning

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-2 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Patriots broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Designated hitter Henri Stanley walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Right fielder Larry Barnes plated Stanley on an infield single to give Somerset a 3-2 lead. Center fielder Edgard Clemente then walked and first baseman Travis Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Barnes and Clemente came home on left fielder Jim Burt's two-run single for a 5-2 advantage.
The Barnstormers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a lead off home run by center fielder Reggie Taylor (16) on the second pitch of the game.
Lancaster added a run in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Keith Maxwell singled, left fielder Jutt Hileman drew a walk, and right fielder Chris Van Rossum singled to load the bases. Catcher Lance Burkhart followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Barnstormers a 2-0 lead.
Somerset tied the game up with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Third baseman Pat Boran singled and stole second base. Stanley then drew a walk, and shortstop Nick Ortiz followed with an RBI single to plate Boran. Stanley scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Patriots reliever Todd Moser (6-6) earned the victory, allowing one hit while striking out two batters in three innings of work. Barnstormers reliever Todd Pennington (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in one inning pitched. Hector Almonte earned his tenth save of the season for Somerset with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 5:05 pm game on Sunday evening against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Sunday's game includes entertainment from Reggy throughout the game. The game will also include the first ever Patriots Spelling Bee with 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion Kerry Close.
