Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers had a brief but impressive display of power on Tuesday evening.
For the first time in franchise history, the Barnstormers clobbered three homers in succession in a road game as Lance Zawadzki, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Luke Hughes strung together the trio of long balls in the fourth, leading Lancaster to a 4-2 victory over Southern Maryland at Regency Furniture Stadium.
For the sixth straight night, Lancaster remained 4 1/2 games ahead of York as the clubs have matched outcomes, including five straight wins. The Barnstormers' magic number dropped to eight win the Tuesday night victory. Twelve games remain on the schedule for Lancaster while York has 13 to play.
Zawadzki connected on a 2-0 offering from left-hander Brian Burres, driving it into the left center field screen to lead off the fourth. For the Lancaster shortstop, it was his fourth home run in a span of six official at bats and league-leading 19th of the season. Burres left the game with an apparent elbow injury immediately following the home run, and Sergio Perez had as much time as he wanted to get ready.
Cavazos-Galvez hit his first home run in a month into that same screen with center fielder Antone DeJesus tumbling over the fence in left center on a leaping attempt. Hughes then took Perez (0-1) onto the picnic deck in left for a 3-2 Lancaster advantage.
A Zach Collier double and Mike McDade single stretched the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Barnstormers managed only three more singles over the remainder of the night.
Shunsuke Watanabe (6-4), making his first appearance in five weeks, struggled through the first two innings. He yielded a pair of runs in the second. Jamar Walton led off with a single to center and scored when Keith Castillo blasted a double over Cavazos-Galvez' head in right. A two-out single to right by Casey Stevenson provided the Blue Crabs with their second run before Bryant Nelson fouled to Juan Apodaca for the final out.
A double play helped Watanabe escape the fourth, and the submariner retired the side in order in the fifth before departing.
Again, the stingy Lancaster bullpen did the job. Mark Lamm retired six of seven he faced. Al Yevoli got two ground ball outs before surrendering an infield single to Walton. Scott Patterson retired Casey Frawley for the final out in the eighth, but allowed a leadoff double to Castillo in the ninth.
The right-hander set down the side in order after that to record his sixth save.
Joe Gardner (8-5) will take the hill for Lancaster against Tim Sexton (1-0) on Wednesday. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Overall, it was the fourth time that Lancaster had crashed three straight homers...The last came in a home game against Sugar Land in 2014 when Andrew Clark, Brett Carroll and Wilson Batista turned the trick...Lancaster has won 32 of its last 45 games...Patterson has thrown 14 consecutive scoreless appearances, covering 13 1/3 innings...Lamm has 9 1/3 scoreless in a row...Hughes was ejected following a bench clearing incident in the bottom of the fourth.
