Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT- September 8, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-31, 53-75) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (25-33, 61-67) 5-2 in the opener of a three-game series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday night. Bridgeport has now lost seven consecutive games overall, matching their season high last set between June 17th and June 23rd. The victory was the 300th all-time in Sugar Land Skeeters franchise history.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Matt Iannazzo (5-10) was tagged with the loss, lasting six innings, giving up five runs (three earned runs) on seven hits, walking four and striking out four while allowing one home run. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Josh Geer (6-7) earned the win with a quality start, tossing six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two. Dan Runzler pitched a scoreless ninth inning while striking out two in registering his first save of the season.
Sugar Land took a 2-0 lead off Iannazzo in the top half of the second inning on a one-out, two-run double off the bat of Patrick Palmeiro, plating Travis Scott and Chris Wallace who reached via a single and a walk respectively, and the visitors had an early two-run cushion. Bridgeport answered with a run of their own off Geer in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Wilson Batista, bringing home Andres Rodriguez after he reached with a leadoff two-base hit of his own. The Skeeters would regain a two-run lead at 3-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Scott, scoring Willy Taveras after he doubled to start the inning. The Skeeters would score two more runs in the sixth for a 5-1 edge on an opposite-field two run home run to right by Palmeiro, who was congratulated at home plate by Johan Limonta after he led off the inning with a free pass. Palmeiro had a 4 RBI night with two extra-base hits as he belted his ninth roundtripper of the season.
The Bluefish cut into the Skeeters lead in the home half of the sixth inning on an RBI single by CJ Retherford, driving home Welington Dotel to trim the Sugar Land to 5-2. Retherford has now reached base safely in all six games played as a member of the 'Fish. Dotel reached base with a one-out triple that kicked up chalk down the right field line. The Liberty Division All-Star and Home Run Derby Champion now has 13 three-baggers and 49 extra-base hits on the 2015 campaign, both leading the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball overall. That would be as close as Bridgeport would get on the evening, as Runzler was the final of a trio of Skeeters relievers to toss three innings without allowing run en route to the victory. Josh Prince and Batista led the way for the Bluefish with two hits each.
Bridgeport continues their series with the Sugar Land Skeeters at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, September 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Chaz & AJ Double Bobblehead, courtesy of 99.1 PLR.
