Barnstormers Blanked By Bridgeport's Carson

August 7, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The night after the Lancaster Barnstormers matched their season high with 18 hits, they ran into a buzzsaw.

Former New York Mets left-hander Robert Carson fired seven shutout innings, striking out 12, to beat the Barnstormers, 4-0, at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Lancaster's lead over York in the Freedom Division dropped to two games as the Revs topped Southern Maryland for the third straight night, 9-5.

Carson (3-0) racked up the biggest single game strikeout total against the Barnstormers since Southern Maryland's Nick Green fanned 12 at Regency Furniture Stadium on September 23, 2012. The Hattiesburg, MS native struck out the side on just 12 pitches in the first inning and recorded all three outs on strikes around a Brian Cavazos-Galvez ground rule double in the second. He would get one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Only Cavazos-Galvez and Juan Apodaca avoided the fury of the Bridgeport southpaw. Apodaca and Anderson Feliz collected the only other Lancaster hits on the night, each picking up a single.

Lancaster came the closest to scoring in the fifth. Luke Hughes reached when his pop up to the right side of the field disappeared into the twilight sky and was dropped by second baseman Bryant Nelson who tried to make the catch at the edge of the infield grass. Apodaca's single to right followed, sending Hughes to third. Carson responded by striking out Feliz and getting Zach Collier to ground to first.

Bridgeport reached Madison Boer for three runs in the third in the right-hander's Atlantic League debut. Ethan Chapman led off with a ground single into right. He advanced on a one-out base hit by Wellington Dotel and scored when Cavazos-Galvez trapped Wilson Batista's sinking liner to right, Andres Rodriguez doubled into the left field corner, bringing home Dotel. Batista was able to score also, avoiding Apodaca's tag on the relay throw home from Feliz.

The Bluefish produced an insurance run off Marcus Walden in the eighth, ending the right-hander's scoreless streak at 26 1/3 innings. Batista opened the inning with a double to right center, moved to third on an Andres Rodriguez ground out, and scored when Matt Wessinger singled through the left side of the infield.

Lancaster and Bridgeport will finish the series on Saturday at 6:05. The Barnstormers will send Joe Gardner (5-3) to the mound against lefty Matt Iannazzo (4-6). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:00.

NOTES: Walden fell 1 1/3 innings short of the longest scoreless streak in club history, set by starter Josh Stevens in 2007...Feliz and Cavazos-Galvez have each hit safely in every game of the series...All five hitting streaks of five games or longer held by the Barnstormers ended on Friday evening...Lancaster was shut out for the 11th time this season, the eighth time on the road.
