Barnette Leads Barons Past Shuckers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham snapped a three-game skid Saturday with a 2-0 win over Biloxi in Huntsville, Ala., at Joe Davis Stadium. It was the second shutout win on the season for the Barons.

Spot-starter Tyler Barnette picked up his second win on the season. The right-hander tossed 6.2 innings, allowing two hits, six walks and striking out one. As a starter Barnette is 2-1 on the year.

Birmingham's first run scored in the fifth on a Tim Anderson groundout. Chris Curley scored from third base to put the Barons on top 1-0. The second run crossed in the seventh with Courtney Hawkins hitting a sacrifice fly to left. Marcus Lemon trotted in from third to lead the Barons to a 2-0 lead.

Reliever Cody Winiarski entered to pitch the ninth inning to pick up his fourth save. Despite giving up two hits, Winiarski retired the side and lowered his ERA to 1.72. Joey DeMichele was 3-for-4 and Hawkins was 2-for-4. Jacob May, Chris Curley and Marcus Lemon each collected one hit.

Birmingham improves to 20-23 while Biloxi falls to 26-17. The Barons are 7.0 games out of first place in the Southern League North, and the Shuckers are in first, 1.5 games ahead of Mississippi.

The series continues Sunday at 2:10 p.m. with the fourth game of the set. Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.60 ERA) starts for Birmingham while the Shuckers send right-hander Hiram Burgos (1-0, 4.69 ERA) to the hill. Sunday's game can be heard live on WERC 105.5 FM and WERFM.com.
