Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - A 6-run Quad Cities 2nd inning - bookended by a 6-run 9th inning - doomed the Kernels, as they fell 16-6 on Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The River Bandits (25-26) swung early and effectively at pitches from Cedar Rapids (23-28) starter Jairo Diaz in the first and second innings. The visitors loaded the bases with no outs in both frames, scoring 2 runs in the first via a walk and a fielder's choice, and pelting 3 doubles in 5 hits in the 2nd on the way to another 6 runs.
Two one-run innings - the 5th and 7th - seemed the last of the River Bandits scoring, until the ultimate inning. Quad Cities added another 6 runs in the 9th, the second inning of the game with 10 or more hitters at the plate.
The Kernels kept it close in the first inning, scoring a run to cut the early 2-0 River Bandits lead in half. Ryan Jones walked, then reached second base on a Kaleb Cowart single. Then during a fielder's choice put in play by Frazier Hall, Jones sprinted from second and slid home while Quad Cities' 1B Roberto De La Cruz was disagreeing with the field umpire about close play at first.
The bottom of the order produced the next three Kernels runs. Hitting eighth, Carlos Lugo reached on an error in the 5th inning. Then both scoring positions were filled when nine-hitter Wendell Soto doubled. Both scored on lead-off man Kevin Moesquit's subsequent double.
Soto scored again in the 7th after hitting his 2nd double of the game on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Jones. Cedar Rapids added two more in the bottom of the 9th with a Cowart 2-RBI single. Cowart was 4-5 with 2 RBI, which pushed his season total to a Midwest League-high 38. Soto also hit well, and finished 2-4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored.
Diaz (2-5) took the loss for Cedar Rapids after he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed 9 runs (all earned) but struck out 5. Quad Cities' starter Jonathan Cornelius (1-1) picked up his first Midwest League victory and struck out 4 Kernels.
The Kernels conclude the series with Quad Cities on Tuesday evening at 6:35 p.m. The home stand continues through Friday.
