MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons fell by the score of 6-2 to the South Bend Silver Hawks at Dow Diamond on the Monday holiday. The loss drops the team one game behind the S-Hawks in the Midwest League's Eastern Division standings.

The Loons welcomed two new members to their roster before the game: outfielder Angelo Songco and right-handed pitcher Ralston Cash, both making their 2012 season debuts. Songco returns to the Loons for the first time since 2010 to begin his fourth professional season after being sidelined earlier in the year by a leg injury sustained in the second half of last season.

"We had a good crowd out there [today], unfortunately we didn't come out with the win, but personally I felt fine," Songco said of his health. "I lost a step or two, but it will come back in time. I'm not too worried about it...just looking to get it back to where I want it."

Songco went 1-for-5, batting third in the Loons line-up as the designated hitter. His lone hit brought in the game-tying run in the third inning for the Loons. Meanwhile, Cash made his Loons debut in the second inning, returning from a hip injury. Cash was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the 2010 draft and was declared injured only 10 starts into his pro career. Today was his first action in front of a stadium audience in almost two years.

"It felt good to be able to throw for a team and for a purpose," Cash said after the game. "I didn't feel [the hip issues] at all really. I felt alive...a lot better today than before the injury. My arm is coming back a lot quicker than I thought it would and the next time I just have to come out with more strikes."

The Georgia-native finished with four strikeouts, leading the team on the day, and one walk, allowing two runs on four hits. He tossed 69 pitches across four innings, 44 of them for strikes. Lefty Jarret Martin got the start, but only pitched one inning, as planned pregame, facing the minimum and collecting one strikeout to bring his impressive season total to 55.

The 2-2 tie held until the seventh inning, when the S-Hawks picked up three runs off of Loons reliever Mike Thomas. South Bend hit two doubles and one single off Thomas, who also walked one before being charged with the loss, his first of the year. Matt Shelton pitched the final two innings, allowing one run and fanning three.

The Loons conclude their four-game set with South Bend on Tuesday night at Dow Diamond. RHP Jose Dominguez (2-2, 5.09 ERA) will start for the Loons against the Silver Hawks RHP J.R. Bradley (2-4, 5.63 ERA).

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season.
