
Lugnuts Smash Captains 14-7

Lake County Captains News Release
(LANSING, MI) - In the first inning, Lansing (36-14) scored six runs off of Felix Sterling. The Captains (25-25) lost the ball game 14-7 and fall back to .500 on the season. Sterling lasted just two thirds of an inning and after one inning of play the score was 6-0 Lugnuts. The Lugnuts have swatted
Lake County halved the lead in the top of the second inning. With the score 6-1, Leonardo Castillo hit a two out double down the right field line and Jerrud Sabourin and Alex Monsalve scored and it was a 6-3 ballgame headed to the bottom of the second inning.
Lansing added on in the bottom of the third inning. Lansing scored three times and took a 9-3 lead. The Lugnuts scored all three runs after two men were out. The big hit in the inning was a single by Jon Berti. The Lugnuts also added a run in the fourth inning when K.C. Hobson led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Kenny Wilson and it was a 10-3 ballgame in the fourth inning.
The Captains scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Lake County started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Jordan Smith then hit an opposite field double which plated two runs. Jerrud Sabourin followed with a single and two more Captains crossed home plate and the score going to the bottom of the fifth was 10-7 Lansing.
In the bottom of the fifth Lansing scored two more. Jon Berti led off the inning with a double and theb was singled to third. Chris Hawkins walked to load the bases and Kevin Pillar singled home Berti. That made it a 11-7 game. Rob Nixon was removed from the game shortly after and Cole Cook entered the ballgame and walked Kevin Patterson to force home the second run of the inning. The score was 12-7 Lugnuts after just five innings. Lansing added a couple runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shane Opitz doubled to lead off and came into score on a single by Chris Hawkins. Carlos Perez who was hit by a pitch scored on a double by K.C. Hobson and the Score was 14-7 Lansing heading to the ninth inning.
Manager David Wallace was ejected from the ballgame in the eighth inning along with LF Jordan Casas. This was the second time Wallace was ejected on the trip.
RHP Noah Syndergaard (3-0) got the no decision for Lansing. Syndergaard went 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 5 K. Anthony DeSclafani (4-1) got the win. He pitched 4.0 innings and allowed five hits, four runs, three were earned a walk and three strikeouts. Javier Avendano worked the scoreless ninth for Lansing.
RHP Felix Sterling (2-4) took the loss. Sterling lasted just two thirds of an inning. Sterling gave up four hits six earned runs and walked two. Sterling has allowed 18 earned runs in his past three innings of work. Both of the rough outings have come on this road trip for Sterling. Rob Nixon entered in the first for Lake County and his line was 3.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Cole Cook also came in for the Captains. Cole's line was 2.2 IP, 2H, 2 BB, 3 K. Francisco Valera pitched the eight inning and gave up three hits, hit a batter and gave up two runs.
The Captains conclude the road trip on Tuesday evening in Lansing, Michigan. The Captains will start a six game home stand beginning on Wednesday night at Classic Park. Tuesday, Lake County will start LHP Elvis Araujo (2-4, 2.66) and the Lugnuts will counter with LHP David Rollins (4-0, 2.64). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
