York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution beat the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-2 in the opener of their three game weekend series in front of 3,844 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday evening. The Revolution used a balanced offense and defense to defeat the Bluefish, collecting 10 hits while only giving up two late runs. This was the sixth consecutive victory for York as they are now 7-1 on this current homestand and are only 1.5 games behind Lancaster for the Freedom Division lead.
The Revolution struck early in their first time coming to bat scoring two runs in the first inning. CF Scott Grimes, on base by way of a hit by pitch, scored on an errant throw while the Bluefish were trying to turn a double play against LF James Shanks. Shanks then proceeded to cross the plate on an RBI single from DH Jose Herrera giving York the early lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning York added to their lead when Herrera smacked another RBI single to score Shanks, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Bluefish finally got on the board in the eighth when RF Danny Putnam doubled in C Luis Rodriguez, who hit a double himself to get on base.
York answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. RF Val Majewski singled but got all the way to third as Putnam misplayed his hit. Shanks followed him and hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring the Revolution lead back to three at 4-1.
They weren't done yet though as 3B Vince Harrison sprayed a single to right-center to score Chris Walker, who came in as a pinch runner for Herrera.
Bridgeport started a rally in the ninth, but it fell short. 2B Angel Chavez and Rodriguez hit two out singles and Chavez scored on another single by SS Angel Berroa, but York RHP Michael Nix got CF Adam Greenberg to pop out to end the game.
York starter RHP John VanBenschoten earned the win (2-1) pitching into the seventh inning for the first time this season while not allowing a run. VanBenschoten was dominant striking out a season high seven Bluefish batters and only giving up three hits.
