Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
MD - The Blue Crabs continued to struggle on their most crucial home stand of the first half as they fell 7-3 to the Long Island
Ducks on Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Southern Maryland fell to 1-3 on the home stand and five games behind Long Island in
the Liberty Division standings with only 14 games to play.
The Blue Crabs started fast as a first-inning single by designated hitter Brian Barton gave Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead. They would extend
it to two in the third on a RBI single from shortstop Yunesky Sanchez, which would be Southern Maryland's biggest lead of the night.
Long Island got a run in the fourth on a double-play ball from catcher J.R. House before they would turn the game around with a four-run
fifth. With the Blue Crabs leading by one with two outs and a runner at second, shortstop Javier Colina (10) would blast a two-run homer to
give the Ducks the lead for good at 3-2. Designated hitter John Rodriguez followed Colina's homer with a single, which set the stage for
another two-run shot by right fielder Matt Esquivel to give Long Island a 5-2 lead.
Southern Maryland tried to make a game of it in the fifth on another RBI single by Sanchez to cut the deficit to two. But with the bases
loaded and only one out, starter Mark Loree got leftfielder Ben Harrison to strike out and catcher Christian Lopez to fly out to end the
threat.
Long Island put their lead back at three in the sixth on a solo homer by House (8) before the Blue Crabs threatened again in the bottom-half
by putting runners at first and second with no one out. But reliever Bob Zimmermann retired the next three hitters to get the Ducks out of
the jam.
The final run of the game came in the ninth as Colina gave the Ducks a 7-3 lead with an RBI single. Colina finished 2-4 with a homer and
three RBI. The offensive heroes, however, were Esquivel and third baseman Matt Padgett who combined to go 6-9 with a homer, double,
two runs scored and two RBI. Second baseman Ray Navarrete chipped in with a couple of hits for the Ducks as well.
Southern Maryland got a 3-5 effort with two RBI and a stolen base from Sanchez and a 2-4 night from second baseman Iggy Suarez. Right
fielder Adam Godwin went 2-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, but had to leave the game in the fourth inning after injuring his
right arm in a slide into third base.
The win went to Loree (8-1) who allowed 11 hits, but only three runs while walking one and striking out seven in five innings of work. The
loss fell to Southern Maryland starter Brian Slocum (3-2) who allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings. He also walked two and struck
out four.
Southern Maryland will take on Long Island in game two of a four-game series on Saturday at 6:35. The Blue Crabs will send righty Eddie
Rodriguez (1-1, 2.28 ERA) to the hill in his first start of the season, against fellow-righty Mike Parisi (5-2, 3.43 ERA) of the Ducks. The game
