VISALIA, CA - Bakersfield (52-37, 15-4) inked their third consecutive win against Visalia (53-36, 7-12) on Monday night at Recreation Ballpark to win the series three-games-to-one with a 5-2 victory.
The Rawhide offense could never get anything going against LHP Tyler Pike (6-5, 3.84), who twirled five shutout innings on just four hits while striking out five.
Visalia scattered four hits through the first six innings before finally cracking the scoreboard in the seventh but by then they were trailing 4-0.
LHP Cody Reed (0-5, 6.06) made his seventh start for Visalia and allowed his third home run of the season in the second inning to the California Player of the Week from July 4th through July 10th C Tyler Marlette. The solo shot was the tenth of the season for Marlette and it gave Bakersfield a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third Bakersfield scored twice after 3B Jordan Cowan singled and SS Drew Jackson singled, CF Braden Bishop moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt. 2B Gianfranco Wawoe hit a sacrifice fly and then Marlette struck again with a single for a 3-0 lead.
In Reed's final inning, the fifth, Wawoe doubled and stole his way to third, finally scoring on Marlette's third RBI of the game for a 4-0 lead. Marlette went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the win.
Reed lasted 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and four runs (earned), walking two and striking out four in the loss.
RHP Jency Solis pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings in relief before the Rawhide finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs 2B Henry Castillo singled to left field and then newly promoted DH Joe Munoz was hit by a pitch. C Tyler Baker came up and for the second night in a row laced a two-run double into the gap to make it a 4-2 game.
LHP Yuhei Nakaushiro gave up a run in the eighth when 1B Joe DeCarlo doubled and scored on Jackson's RBI single to make it a 5-2 lead.
RHP Drew Muren pitched a scoreless ninth in relief and then into the game came LHP Jacob Zokan, who promptly retired the Rawhie one, two, three to seal the 5-2 victory for Bakersfield.
The Blaze are now only one game back of Visalia for the best overall record in the North Division and the season series now stands at 11-4 in favor of the Rawhide.
Tuesday is a league-wide off day and then Visalia will head to Lake Elsinore to open up a three game series beginning on Wednesday, July 13th. RHP Brad Keller (6-6, 4.93) will make the start in game one for Visalia against RHP Chris Huffman (7-3, 3.09) for the Storm.
