Rancho Drops Third Straight

Adelanto, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped three of four to the High Desert Mavericks, losing 8-7 on Monday night to end a disappointing 3-5 road trip.

Edwin Rios' two home runs and Joey Curletta's two-run double in the ninth inning were not enough, as the Quakes suffered their sixth straight one-run loss.

The Mavs struck first in the first inning off of Quakes starter Tommy Bergjans. Jose Cardona blasted a solo home run to left field, his eighth of the season, to make it 1-0.

High Desert added four more runs in the second inning. David Lyon led off the frame with a solo home run, his ninth of the season and second of the series. After Jairo Beras and Michael De Leon singled with two outs, Luke Tendler hit a popup on the infield that was dropped by catcher Julian Leon, allowing Beras to score. The next hitter, Cardona, crushed a two-run double to score De Leon and Tendler to make it 5-0.

Rancho Cucamonga cut into the deficit and scored three runs in the third inning off of Tyler Davis. Erick Mejia and Tim Locastro led off the inning with back-to-back singles, bringing up Rios. The left-hander unloaded on a Davis fastball and drove it over the fence in dead-center field, a three-run shot to make 5-3.

However, Bergjans didn't get a shutdown inning, as in the bottom of the third, High Desert scored two more. Josh Morgan reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Lyon singled. With two outs, Kevin Torres, who was hitting just .164 coming into Monday's game, launched a two-run double off the left field wall to extend the Mavs lead to 7-3.

Ariel Sandoval hit a solo home run, his second of the season to lead off the fourth inning to bring Rancho to within 7-4.

In the fifth inning, Beras hit an RBI single to score Morgan, to extend High Desert's lead to 8-4.

Rancho Cucamonga didn't go down quietly. Rios hit his second home run of the game and tenth in a Rancho uniform, a solo blast to lead off the seventh, to pull the Quakes within two.

In the ninth, Curletta knocked a two-run double off the center field wall to plate two runs and bring Rancho to within one at 8-7. With Curletta on second base and two out, the Mavs brought on Nick Gardewine, who struck out Leon to end the game and record his first save of the year.

Bergjans (2-9) was handed the loss. He allowed eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits in five innings. Wes Helsabeck was superb out of Rancho Cucamonga's bullpen; he pitched three shutout innings and allowed just one base runner.

Shane McCain (3-1) earned the win for High Desert with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball out of Mavs bullpen.

The Quakes finish their season-long eight-game road trip with a 3-5 record. After winning the first two games in Inland Empire, Rancho finished the trip 1-5.

Rancho (10-9, 52-37) falls to two games back of Lancaster for the lead in the Second Half South Division standings with the loss. The Quakes will look to get back on track at home, as a seven-game home stand is set to begin on Wednesday against Inland Empire after an off day on Tuesday. RHP Felipe Gonzalez (2-3, 5.09 ERA), will start for the Quakes while RHP Jeremy Rhoades (2-8, 5.84) goes for Inland Empire.
