Marlette & Pike Rock Rawhide to Sleep

July 12, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Hours after being named the Cal League Player of the Week, Tyler Marlette had some unfinished business to take care of in Visalia.

Having an apparent home run taken away on Sunday, Marlette touched up Cody Reed for a solo home run in the second inning as the Bakersfield Blaze (52-37) outclassed the Rawhide (53-36) in a 5-2 victory.

Marlette earned his POW honors (7/4-10) after going tallying up a .607 (17-28) batting average, 6 doubles, a home run, eight RBI, and eight runs scored. On Sunday night he hit a line drive off the small left field scoreboard that was initially ruled a homer by home plate umpire Brandon Butler. Base umpire Heath Jones overruled Butler as Marlette had to settle for a double.

On Monday evening Marlette made things right by socking his 10th long ball of the year over the right field wall to lead off the second inning.

The hard-hitting catcher was not done, but he wasn't alone.

Tyler Pike (W, 6-5) hardly broke a sweat pitching five easy inning of shutout ball as the southpaw scattering four hits and struck out five batters. Pike threw 71 pitches, 47 strikes, and did not walk a batter as he left the game with a 4-0 advantage.

Pike's run support was nearly all because of his battery mate.

Marlette was 3-3 in his first three at-bats, driving home three runs and providing all the offense necessary in Game 4.

Cody Reed (L, 0-5) left the game after working 4.2 innings, surrendering all four runs off of seven hits for the Rawhide.

Bakersfield won a series for the first time this year against Visalia (3-1) and now they are just one game back in the overall standings.

The numbers and accolades continue to flow for the Blaze and they are with plenty of merit.

Bakersfield (15-4) leads the North Division by six games in the second half of the season and they own the Cal League's best road record with a 32-14 mark that includes 20 wins in their last 22 contests away from Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The team gets a rare day off before they return to action on Wednesday evening for a 3-game series against the Modesto Nuts. Tickets are available on BakersfieldBlaze.com along with the main office.
