Kitchener Rangers News Release
Justin Bailey recorded his second career hat trick on Saturday, but the Kitchener Rangers fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Erie Otters. Darby Llewellyn scored his first of the season in the loss, and Arizona Coyotes prospect Ryan MacInnis added a trio of assists for the Rangers.
The Rangers opened the scoring seven minutes in, jumping ahead on the power play. Justin Bailey extended his point streak to five games, jumping on a rebound at the Erie net and jamming it past goalie Daniel Dekoning. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Ryan MacInnis and import forward Gustaf Franzen.
MacInnis and Bailey connected again less than two minutes later, lifting Kitchener to a 2-0 lead. MacInnis earned the puck off the faceoff in Erie territory and moved it quickly to the Buffalo Sabres prospect, who unleashed a hard shot over the shoulder of Dekoning to pick up his second of the night. A second round pick of the Arizona Coyotes, MacInnis also has points in five straight contests.
The Otters found their way onto the scoreboard before the end of the opening frame, when Dylan Strome cut across the front of the Rangers crease and shoveled a shot over the pad of Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield. A top prospect for the 2015 Entry Draft, Strome has scored twice this season. Patrick Murphy and Quentin Maksimovich earned the helpers on the goal at 17:00.
Each team fired 12 shots on goal in the first period.
Two quick goals gave Erie its first lead of the game early in the middle frame. Alex DeBrincat's third goal in two games pulled the Otters even at 2-2. Connor McDavid initiated the play, carrying the puck behind the net and finding the rookie in front of Greenfield. DeBrincat's goal was his team-leading eighth of the season.
Freshman centre Trent Fox put Erie ahead less than two minutes later after overage rearguard Troy Donnay sprung him free and sent him racing into the Rangers zone. The younger brother of former Otter Dane Fox, Trent's goal was the first of his Ontario Hockey League career, and was also assisted by Shaun Bily.
Kitchener led shots on goal 14-10 in the second period.
Justin Bailey completed the hat trick just 32 seconds into the final frame, tying the score at 3-3. His sixth goal of the season was set up by MacInnis, who picked up his third assist of the game on the play. It was the second career three-goal night for the Williamville, NY native, who leads the Rangers with 10 points on the year. The second assist on the play was credited to veteran winger Brent Pedersen.
Strome's second of the night put the Otters back on top, with 16 minutes left to play. Erie's top power play unit connected on the tally, with McDavid finding Strome in the slot to the right of Greenfield. He lifted a shot over the netminder to record his third of the season, with a secondary assist from Murphy.
With less than seven minutes to play, the Rangers regained equal ground with Darby Llewellyn's first marker of the season. The Ann Arbor, MI winger tied for the team lead in 2013-14 with 25 goals and potted his first of this year when he jumped on a rebound and pushed it between the pads of Dekoning. Captain Liam Maaskant earned his first point of the season with a helper on the play. Curtis Meighan also earned an assist on the goal at 13:08.
The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal 9-8 in the second, and finished with a 35-30 overall advantage in regulation.
The score remained deadlocked at 4-4 through a five minute overtime period, with Greenfield making four saves and Dekoning coming up with three stops for the Otters.
The contest was decided in a shootout, where Connor McDavid and Mason Marchment tested Greenfield to take the win in four rounds. Justin Bailey was the lone Rangers skater to score in the shootout.
Kitchener's record now stands at 2-3-0-1. The Rangers will complete their long weekend with a Thanksgiving matinee against the Guelph Storm on Monday at 2:00pm.
