Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve earned their first victory of the 2014 season by downing the Erie SeaWolves, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Nick Kingham (1-0) tossed six shutout innings in his 2014 debut and earned the win as the Curve welcomed their 5 millionth fan in franchise history.
The Curve collected their first hit and, at the same time, took their first lead of the season in the bottom of the fifth. After a pair of one-out walks by Willy Garcia and Jarek Cunningham, Elias Diaz hit a two-out double down the right field line, scoring Garcia and Cunningham. Diaz was out trying to advance to third, but the Curve led 2-0.
In the eighth inning, Altoona added three insurance runs. After Diaz drew a one-out walk and stole second, Keon Broxton hit a single to right field, allowing Diaz to score when Steven Moya committed an error. Alen Hanson followed with a triple to score Broxton and later scored on a wild pitch.
Kingham tossed six shutout innings in his 2014 debut to pick up the victory. The right-hander struck out six batters, walked three, and scattered three hits. Southpaw Kyle Ryan (0-1) took the loss despite not allowing any hits over 4.1 innings.
Along with the Curve victory, the five-millionth fan to visit the stadium was honored at the conclusion of the game. Altoona native Aaron Haselbarth won season tickets for life, an honorary captainship of the Curve alumni team for the Curve, Pa. Heroes Game, a custom jersey, free VIP Parking and a trip for two to Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training in 2015.
The Curve (1-2) will be in action Monday night when they host the Akron RubberDucks (AA - Indians) for the first Mirror Monday of the season. Fans can get a coupon for a $3 grandstand ticket to the 6:30 p.m. game from the front page of the sports section in the Altoona Mirror.
Southpaw Joely Rodriguez (NR) will make his Double-A debut for the Curve and will be opposed by Akron's right hander Kyle Davies (NR). Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6 p.m.
