Evan MacLane threw five shutout innings and three different players drove in runs as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Akron Aeros 3-0 on Opening Night Thursday at NYSEG Stadium. The win snapped a three-game home-opener losing streak for the B-Mets.
Binghamton (1-0) got to Akron starter Rafael Perez for runs in each of the first two innings. Carlos Gomez led off the B-Mets' half of the first with a walk and stole second before Brett Harper drove him in with a line-drive single to centerfield for a 1-0 lead. Gomez was in the thick of the action again in the second when he reached Perez (0-1) for a two-out bloop-base hit in the second, scoring Bobby Malek for a 2-0 advantage, Malek led off the inning with a triple. Binghamton's final run came when Yunir Garcia led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored two batters later on Wilson Batista's two-bagger off the left-centerfield fence.
Meanwhile, MacLane (1-0) scattered a pair of two-out singles over his five innings of work to go along with five strikeouts as he retired 15 of the 17 Akron (0-1) hitters to face him. Orlando Roman, Anderson Garcia and Henry Owens followed with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit. Owens worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up his first save.
