Games #61 - Tuesday, June 12, 2012
NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 6:35 PM
LAST GAME: The B-Mets were one out away from securing their first road series sweep of the season, but Shane Brown ripped a two-run single in the bottom of the tenth to give the Trenton Thunder a 3-2 walk-off victory Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park. The B-Mets had taken a one-run lead in the top of the tenth on a throwing error by Jose Pirela and looked to Adrian Rosario to lock down the save. The righty got two quick outs before allowing a single, issuing a walk and uncorking a wild pitch. Brown ripped a 2-0 pitch into left to give Trenton the walk-off win. Lee Hyde allowed one unearned run over two innings to earn the win. Rosario suffered his first loss and blown save as a B-Met. Binghamton plated their first run when Matt den Dekker scored on a wild pitch by starter Brett Marshall in the fourth inning.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (3-5, 3.92) makes his eleventh start of the season and first against the Reading Phillies. Cohoon took the no-decision in his last start versus the Harrisburg Senators on June 5. The lefty allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. A 12th-round pick in the June 2008 draft by the Mets, the southpaw is in his fifth season of pro baseball. It's his third year with the B-Mets.
RHP Jonathan Pettibone (5-5, 3.79) makes his 13th start of the season and second against the B-Mets. The California native earned the win in his previous start against the Altoona Curve on June 6. He allowed two runs and scattered seven hits over seven innings. The righty struck out three and did not issue a walk for the third time this season. Pettibone was tagged for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits over six innings in a loss versus the B-Mets on May 31. Selected in the third round as a supplemental pick in the 2008 draft out of Esperanza HS (Yorba Linda, CA), Pettibone is in his fifth pro season. He went 10-11 with a 2.96 ERA with the Clearwater Threshers (High-A) last year. He tied for the team lead with 27 starts.
DEN DEKKER DEPARTS: The New York Mets announced Monday that outfielder Matt den Dekker has been promoted to the Buffalo Bisons (AAA). He had been named Eastern League Player of the Week earlier in the day. The Florida native departs Binghamton as the league leader in batting average (.340), hits (81), doubles (21), slugging percentage (.563), runs (47) and total bases (134). In 130 games as a B-Mets spanning two seasons, he hit .284 and collected 19 home runs.
LATE LEADS SLIPPING AWAY: In each of Binghamton's three losses on their last roadtrip, they owned a one-run lead in the seventh inning or later. Their bullpen suffered a blown save in all three loses. The B-Mets have successfully nailed down 56% of their save opportunities this season (9/16), the second-worst percentage in the league (New Hampshire: 55%).
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: Binghamton took two of three games from the Trenton Thunder, earning their fourth road series win of the season. The B-Mets have earned just two series wins at home in 2012.
SITTING COMFORTABLE: The B-Mets sit fourth in the Eastern Division, trailing the Trenton Thunder by 5.0 games. They have been in fourth since May 2.
ENDING THE STREAK: The two runs allowed by Adrian Rosario on Sunday afternoon were the first he had surrendered as a B-Met. The righty had not given up a run in his first 8.1 innings.
AGAINST THE READING PHILLIES: The B-Mets welcome the R-Phils to the Southern Tier for their only regular season visit in 2012. Binghamton split a rain-shortened two-game series against Reading at FirstEnergy Stadium in May. The B-Mets went 2-5 against the R-Phils at NYSEG Stadium last year, including a four-game sweep by Reading to end the season.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Reading Phillies tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Collin McHugh takes the hill against RHP Austin Hyatt.
