Games #54 & 55 - Monday, June 4, 2012
NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 10:35 AM
LAST GAME: The B-Mets held a 2-1 lead over the Akron Aeros in the top of the fourth inning when heavy rain suspended play yesterday at NYSEG Stadium. Nick Weglarz had a 3-1 count and a runner on first base with two outs when the umpiring crew opted to place the tarp on the field. The game was officially suspended after the teams waited through a 53-minute delay. B-Mets starter Greg Peavey allowed one run on three hits over 3.2 innings. Binghamton scored their two runs in the second inning against Akron starter T.J. House. Joe Bonfe delivered an RBI single to get Binghamton on the board and scored when Kai Gronauer's single to center was bobbled by Tim Fedroff. The Aeros scored their only run on an RBI single by Davis Stoneburner. The start of the game was delayed by 29 minutes due to the threat of rain and the teams waited through an 11-minute delay after the top of the third inning.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (3-5, 3.52) makes his tenth start of the season and second against the Aeros. The southpaw earned his only win in the month of May in his previous start against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on May 27. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out two over seven innings. Cohoon took the loss in his only other start against the Aeros. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings on May 2 in a game the B-Mets would lose 3-1. With his start today, Cohoon surpasses his total number of B-Mets starts from last year (9). His career-high with Binghamton is 13, set in 2010.
LHP Giovanni Soto (4-2, 4.31) makes his eleventh start of the season and second against the B-Mets. The native of Carolina, Puerto Rico took a no-decision in his last start against the Bowie Baysox on May 30. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. The southpaw hit two batters, a season-high. Soto allowed just one run and struck out a season-high nine B-Mets over seven innings in a win on May 2. Originally drafted by the Tigers in 2009, Soto was traded to the Indians in exchange for SS Jhonny Peralta in July 2010. This is his first season at the Double-A level. He went 4-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 games (11 starts) with the Kinston Indians (High-A) last year.
SUSPENSION NOTES: The B-Mets experienced their first suspended game since their contest against the Altoona Curve on May 27, 2011 was suspended in the top of the seventh inning. The B-Mets have had 26 suspended games in their franchise history. The last five have all come at home.
DEN DEKKER BACK ON TRACK: After going through a mini-slide of 0-for-10 over four games, Matt den Dekker blasted a solo home run in the third inning Saturday night. It was his team-leading eighth of the season. He is tied with Reynaldo Rodriguez of Portland for the league lead with 28 extra-base hits.
LET'S ALMOST PLAY TWO: In accordance with Rule 4.12(a)(8) in the Major League Baseball rulebook, today's regularly scheduled game will be a seven-inning contest.
