PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 28th through June 3rd:
Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Bryce Brentz has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 28th-June 3rd. The 23-year old batted .435 (10-for-23) with three doubles, two home runs, six runs scored, four RBI, two walks and an .826 slugging percentage in seven games for the Sea Dogs last week. Brentz, who is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, had at least one hit in five of the games he played in and drove in or scored a run in four of those games, including going 5-for-5 with three doubles, four runs scored and one RBI in a 7-2 win at Harrisburg on Thursday morning. That performance put him in the record book as he became the first player in franchise history with two five-hit games. His first five-hit performance came on May 13th at Trenton. The 6'0", 190 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (.826), OPS (1.326), extra-base hits (5) and total bases (19) last week and tied for the league in runs scored (6). He also finished among the leaders in home runs (2-tied 2nd), hits (10-3rd) and doubles (3-tied 4th). Bryce was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the supplemental portion of the first round of the 2010 draft as the 36th overall pick after hitting .348 with 15 home runs and 49 RBI during his junior season at Middle Tennessee State University.
David Buchanan, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 28th-June 3rd. The 6'3", 190 lb. hurler appeared in one game for the Reading Phillies last week and had a record of 1-0 with five strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. In his only start of the week the Atlanta, Georgia native struck out five batters and walked one while throwing a nine-inning complete game shutout in an 8-0 victory at Harrisburg on Monday night. He scattered seven hits while throwing the first nine-inning complete game shutout by a Reading pitcher since Drew Naylor blanked the Curve in a 3-0 win at Altoona on September 6, 2010. The 23-year old earned his first road win of the season for the R-Phils with his performance last week and has now pitched 13 consecutive innings without allowing a run. David, who has a record of 2-3 with 35 strikeouts and a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts for the R-Phils this season, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh round of the 2010 draft after posting a record of 4-2 with 53 strikeouts and a 4.72 ERA over 55.1 innings during his junior season at Georgia State University. He was previously selected by the New York Mets in the sixth round of the 2009 draft but did not sign.
