Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Eastern League announced on Monday that Reading Phillies starting pitcher David Buchanan has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 28 through June 3. Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Bryce Brentz was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the same period.

During the past week, Buchanan appeared in one game for the R-Phils where he struck out five batters and walked one while throwing a nine-inning complete game shutout in an 8-0 win over the Harrisburg Senators on Monday, May 28. The complete game was the first thrown by a Reading starter this season and the first nine-inning complete game tossed by a Reading pitcher since Drew Naylor held the Altoona Curve scoreless in a 3-0 win at Altoona on September 6, 2010.

Last Monday's win was the first road win for Buchanan in 2012. The Atlanta native hasn't allowed a run in 13 consecutive innings. This season, Buchanan is 2-3 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts for the Reading Phillies. He has also struck out 35 batters while walking 18.

It is just Buchanan's third season playing professional baseball. Last season, Buchanan split time between Lakewood (A) and Clearwater (A+) where he went a combined 14-7 with a 3.49 ERA over 26 starts with 110 total strikeouts.

Buchanan was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies when he was drafted in the seventh round of the June 2010 draft after attending Georgia State University. Before being selected by the Phillies, Buchanan was taken in the sixth round of the June 2009 draft by the New York Mets, but the right-handed pitcher did not sign.

There are only 37 days remaining until the Baseballtown All-Star Classic and tickets for that and all regular season home games can be purchased online at www.RPhils.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, and in person at the R-Phils Ticket Office at FirstEnergy Stadium. The 2012 season featuring the Baseballtown All-Star Classic at America's Classic Ballpark is presented by Pepsi.
