Game #71 - Friday, June 22, 2012
Jerry Uht Park - Erie, PA - 7:05 PM
LAST GAME: Eric Campbell smacked two RBI doubles and the B-Mets got solid contributions from three newcomers in a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Akron Aeros last night at Canal Park. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Campbell laced an two-bagger to center to tie the game. He added another RBI double as insurance in the eighth. Newly promoted third baseman Wilmer Flores brought in the go-ahead run with a single later in the sixth. Catcher Francisco Pena launched a solo home run in his first at bat. Gonzalez Germen earned his third consecutive win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings. Ryan Fraser fanned three in two scoreless innings of relief and Robert Carson worked around a leadoff walk to collect his fifth save of the season.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (4-4, 4.50) takes the hill for his 12th start of the season and first against the SeaWolves. The lefty lost his most recent start against the Altoona Curve on June 16. He matched a season-high by allowing ten hits, including two home runs, over five innings. He did not walk a batter, but surrendered six runs while striking out five. Selected in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, Gorski is in his first season with the B-Mets.
LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (4-6, 3.45) makes his 15th appearance of the year and his 13th start. The southpaw from the Dominican Republic went the distance to earn the win in his last start against the New Britain Rock Cats on June 15. He allowed two runs over six hits and struck out four in nine innings of work. It was the first nine-inning complete-game victory of his eight-year pro career. De La Cruz has faced the B-Mets twice this season, making one start. He has gone 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA while striking out ten over 9.1 innings of work. De La Cruz spent the first seven years of his pro career in the Cleveland Indians system. He was claimed off waivers by the Tigers in late March 2012. This season is his fourth in the Eastern League after spending parts of three seasons with the Akron Aeros.
STARTING WITH A BANG: Catcher Francisco Pena kicked off his Double-A career on the right foot. Promoted to Binghamton prior to last night's game, Pena ripped a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run in the third inning. He joins Reese Havens as the only two B-Mets to homer in their first at-bats this season. Havens went deep with a two-run shot against the SeaWolves at Jerry Uht Park on April 29.
CAMPBELL CONTINUES TO LEAD: B-Mets first baseman Eric Campbell went 3-for-3 last night and reached safely in all four plate appearances. He is currently hitting at .324, the fourth-best batting average in the league. It's the highest batting average this deep into the season in three years with the B-Mets. His .434 on-base percentage leads the Eastern League by 31 percentage points.
SO LONG, CANAL PARK: The B-Mets come off a demanding series against the Aeros. The teams completed a suspended game and postponed contest from earlier in the season, playing five games in three days. The B-Mets went 2-3 in the stretch.
ESCAPING AKRON: The B-Mets managed to earn a series split against the Aeros by taking the final two games of the set. It was just the second time Akron has lost consecutive games at Canal Park this season.
WESTERN SWING CONTINUES: This four-game series in Erie is the third of eight straight series for Binghamton against Western Division teams. The B-Mets have gone 3-4 to start the 25-game stretch.
AGAINST THE SEAWOLVES: The B-Mets have gone 3-2 against the SeaWolves this season, including a 2-1 mark at Jerry Uht Park. In five meetings, Binghamton is hitting just .205 as a team, but their pitching staff has compiled a 2.25 staff ERA.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game set against the Erie SeaWolves tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey gets the nod for Binghamton against RHP Patrick Cooper.
