Game #67 - Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Canal Park - Akron, OH - 6:05 PM
LAST GAME: The Altoona Curve pounded out a season-high 20 hits and pummeled the Binghamton Mets in the rubber match of a three-game series by a 15-6 score Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The loss bumped Binghamton's record back to three games under .500, matching their low-water mark on the year. After the Curve grabbed a two-run lead against Greg Peavey in the first, Binghamton answered back in the second. Following a pair of walks, Travis Ozga took starter Shairon Martis deep for a three-run homer, his fourth of the season. Altoona wasted little time erasing the lead, putting up four runs in the third inning. The Curve proceeded to outscore the B-Mets 13-3 over the final seven innings. Peavey plowed through five innings, allowing four earned runs in his third loss. Martis made it through 5.2 frames to earn his fifth win. The Curve capped their day by tagging Robert Carson for five runs on six hits in the ninth inning.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Mark Cohoon (3-6, 3.93) makes his 12th start of the season and second against the Akron Aeros. He took a loss in his last start, allowing three runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings against the Reading Phillies on June 13. Cohoon tossed six scoreless innings in the first game of the doubleheader before allowed three runs in the final inning. The southpaw started against the Aeros on May 2 and took a defeat, surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings.
RHP Paolo Espino (0-2, 3.31) takes the mound for his seventh start of the season and third against the Binghamton Mets. Espino scattered ten hits and allowed just two runs over 5.2 innings in a no-decision in his last start versus the New Britain Rock Cats on June 14. He struck out three and did not issue any walks. In two starts against the B-Mets Espino has gone 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA. The righty has thrown five innings or more in each of his last five starts with the Aeros. The native of Panama made two starts with the Columbus Clippers (AAA) in mid-May, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA.
HITS GALORE: The 20 hits allowed by the Binghamton Mets were the most the B-Mets have surrendered this season. It is the most hits an opponent has collected since the Portland Sea Dogs pounded out 21 in a 13-2 win over the B-Mets on April 20, 2008, the most allowed in franchise history.
SETTING THE STAGE: The B-Mets and Aeros will start their series by resuming a game that was suspended initially on June 3 and again on June 4. The contest is currently tied at two with one out in the top of the sixth. Armando Rodriguez had a 1-2 count on Adam Abraham before the game was halted due to rain more than two weeks ago. The B-Mets and Aeros will play a seven-inning game following the first game's completion. All stats from the game one are considered "home" for the B-Mets.
A JAM-PACKED ROADTRIP: Due to a pair of rain outs during the last series between the B-Mets and Aeros at NYSEG Stadium earlier in the month, the clubs will finish five games in three days at Canal Park in this series. Binghamton will complete their nine-game roadtrip, the longest of the season, with a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves.
A UNIQUE SERIES: Binghamton will make up their suspended game from June 3 & 4 tonight. They will also make up their postponed game from June 4 tomorrow as part of a doubleheader. Binghamton will serve as the "home" team in the first game of the double dip.
AGAINST THE AEROS: The B-Mets have gone 3-6 versus the Aeros this season, including a 1-3 mark at Canal Park. Binghamton was nearly swept in a four-game series in Akron in early May. Binghamton has hit just .209 as a team against Akron and been held to two runs or fewer in six of their nine completed games.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Akron Aeros with a doubleheader tomorrow at Canal Park starting at 6:05 PM. RHP Zack Wheeler gets the ball for the B-Mets in the opener.
