Awards Continue to Pile Up for Hahn

March 22, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - During his 2005-2006 campaign, the magical season for Derek Hahn has led the center to a starting position and assistant captaincy at the Obra Homes All-Star game as the leading vote-getter, to a Sher-Wood December Player of the Month award, to a pair of Oakley Player of the Week nods and to a nomination for the Central Hockey League's prestigious Most Valuable Player award, among several other accolades. Now, the league's points-leader can add All-CHL to his resume.

On Monday afternoon, the league announced its All-CHL team, featuring three members of each conference. Hahn, named one of three forwards, was joined by Youngstown's Jeff Christian, the league's goal-leader with 52, and Colorado's Greg Pankewicz, the CHL's reining MVP. On defense, the team features Laredo's Serge Dube, who has been up-and-down between the Bucks and San Antonio of the American Hockey League this year, along with Derek Landmesser of Memphis, who is pacing all defensemen with 75 points. In net, it's Ken Carroll of Bossier-Shreveport, third in the league with a 2.31 goals-against-average along with 20 wins.

Hahn leads the CHL with 110 points, powered by 35 goals and 75 assists, also a league-best. His point-total ties him with former Amarillo Rattler Chris Brooks for the all-time single-season high in points for a player in an Amarillo uniform in the community's almost 40-year hockey history. Brooks accomplished the feat during the 1996-1997 season and surpassed the century-mark in points twice in his Rattlers career. Hahn, the 2002-2003 CHL Rookie of the Year, has hit the mark for the first time and is the first player in the league to do so since Laredo's Jeff Bes had 117 points in 2003-2004. The assistant captain, riding a season-best 12-game points-streak during which he has amassed 21 points, has three games remaining in the regular season to surpass Brooks and attempt to catch Bes.

"It's incredible, 110 points at this level," said Head Coach Joe Ferras. "Jeff Christian and Greg Pankewicz, guys who have played in the National Hockey League and you see a Derek Hahn coming out of a Division-II hockey school at RIT hitting that plateau. It just goes to show you, hard work and dedication, anybody can do it but you have to make the sacrifice. He's a competitor and a tremendous asset for our hockey team. We've said it over and over again but he's also a phenomenal ambassador to Amarillo, our community and our organization. He deserves the award and hopefully we'll get a phone call from the league on Friday announcing him as the MVP as well."

Earlier this month, Hahn was also extremely well represented in the CHL's annual Best of the Best Poll, announced as the league's Best Overall Player, Best Stick-Handler, Best Player-Maker, Smartest Player, third-Best Skater and third-Best Leader.

"The season has been remarkable for Derek," said Coach Ferras. "And this weekend should be no different."
