Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Youngstown, OH - The Youngstown SteelHounds (22-35-5) put an end to their 10-game home winless streak in bruising fashion on Wednesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Fort Worth Brahmas (17-37-8). The win puts Youngstown 6-0 on the season versus the Brahmas who got a hat trick from Chris Richards and a goal and three helpers for Jeff Christian who jumps to 100 points on the season. The game was the most physical in the six match-ups as the teams combined for 101 penalty minutes in the game.

An explosive first period of play saw the Hounds take a 2-0 lead and saw a brawl at the 9:29 mark. Youngstown scored the first goal of the game at the 8:31 mark with Chris Richards finishing a play that was set up by great passing form Jeff Christian and Joey Sewell. For Richards, it was his 19th goal of the season and the assist pushed Christian up to 97 points in his quest for 100. Youngstown made it 2-0 with a re-directed goal by Darryl Lloyd, his 17th of the season, off a great feed from Mario Chinelli (Matt Hanson also was credited with an assist) scored at the 15:35 mark. The ruckus in the period came with a scrum in the corner in the Brahmas defensive zone that led to Chris Bain leaving his bench and throwing a sucker punch dropping a SteelHounds player. This led to Kris Mallette finding Bain at the other end of the ice with both players eventually receiving double game misconducts. The Hounds outshot the Brahmas 17-9 in the period.

In the second period, the Brahmas cut the lead in half with Jimmy Sokol cleaning up a loose puck in front of the net for his 13th goal of the season making the score 2-1. Youngstown then padded their lead with goals from Chris Richards and Jeff Christian increasing their advantage to 4-1. The goal for Richards was his second of the game and 20th of the season and the tally for Christian was his league-leading 53rd of the season. Fort Worth would tack on a late second period goal by Ty Hennes, his 11th of the season, cutting the lead to 4-2 after two periods. Youngstown led 28-15 on the shot board.

The scoring stayed idle in the third period with the Hounds nursing their two-goal lead all the way until their was less than a minute in the period when Richards netted his first hat trick of the season and Christian earned his fourth point of the night and 100th point of the season with an assist.

An interesting point of the game came with 11 seconds left and Youngstown on a power play. Coach J.F. Laforest, who has been going at it with Fort Worth Coach Guy Larose most of the night, pulled David St. Germain bringing an extra skater on the ice trying to add a late goal. The crowd urged the Hounds to score one last goal which would have resulted in the entire crowd winning Big Macs but the team fell short missing in the final moments of the game.

The Hounds finished the game outshooting the Brahmas 38-22 as Larry Sterling made 33 saves falling to 16-27-3 and David St. Germain made 20 saves improving to 17-27-4 and 5-0 on the season versus Fort Worth.

The Hounds take on the Brahmas again on Friday night in what should be an exciting rematch. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
