Award-Winning Defenseman J.C. Sawyer to Join Cyclones

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The 2010 Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have agreed to terms with ECHL Defenseman of the Year J.C. Sawyer and rookie defenseman David Sloane for the 2010-11 season.

Sawyer, a Saint John, New Brunswick native, had a career year in 2009-10 by pacing all ECHL defenseman in goals (21), points (59), and game-winnings goals (7). His 38 assists ranked him second among league blue-liners, while he finished tied for fourth with 18 power-play assists and fifth with 24 power-play points.

A 2004 fifth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Wild, Sawyer was chosen as a starter for the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game and served as captain for the American Conference.

"I believe that J.C. is a dynamic player who has put up some great numbers during his career," said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. "I think a guy like him will really help our power play grow offensively, and is going be very beneficial for us."

Sawyer has also seen some time in the AHL, logging 27 games at the triple-A level during his three-year career. Before going pro in 2007, he spent five seasons playing with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL).

Sloane, a second-year pro, joins the Cyclones after spending much of his first full season at the AHL level. In 2009-10, the Ambler, Pennsylvania native appeared in 20 games with the Adirondack Phantoms. Before that, after finishing a four-year career at Colgate University, Sloane made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008-09. His game last year's Eastern Conference Champions was against the New York Rangers at the "World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden. He became the first Philadelphia-area native to ever suit up for the Flyers.
