Frederick Keys News Release
Keys CF Xavier Avery finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a two run home run down the right field line as Frederick gained an early lead and leaned on its strong bullpen in a 6-3 series opening win in Lynchburg on Monday night in the Hill City.
Avery doubled to lead off the game, singled in the third inning and then provided the decisive blow with his two out two-run fourth inning home run. Avery could not register a triple for the first Keys cycle since Jeff Fiorentino in May of 2005.
Trailing 2-1 in the third inning, the first four Keys batters of the inning reached. C Brian Ward walked, Avery singled and CF Kyle Hudson bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Next up was RF Ronnie Welty who continued his outstanding second half with a single to right field scoring Ward. Two batters later 2B LJ Hoes' groundout gave the Keys a 3-2 lead. Avery, Hudson and Welty combined for seven of the Keys eight hits on the night.
An inning later after the two-run Avery home run lifted the Keys atop, 5-2. Hudson singled, stole second and scored on a Welty triple for a 6-2 lead. Hudson's two steals on the night lifted his season total to 26.
Frederick then turned to its bullpen after RHP Luis Noel (2-0) battled through a rocky five innings. Noel did strike out eight on the night. RHP Brett Jacobson, LHP Brett Bordes and new closer Josh Dowdy combined to work four shutout innings. Bordes has not allowed an earned run in his last 12 outings dating back to June 11th. Dowdy picked up his first Carolina League save.
The series continues on Tuesday night, July 20th as the Keys send Ryan O'Shea to the hill. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on The Keys Baseball Network.
Frederick returns home for a jam-packed seven-game homestand beginning Thursday, July 22nd with 50 Cent Hot Dog Night presented by Dietz and Watson. For your tickets contact The Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
