KINSTON, NC (JULY 19, 2010) - Winston-Salem used strong pitching, abundant hitting, and outstanding defense to collect a 7-3 series-opening win against the Kinston Indians on Monday night at Grainger Stadium. The Dash jumped out to a 7-0 lead and staved off an eighth-inning Kinston rally to collect the victory and snap its two-game losing streak.

After pounding out a season-high 23 hits in Saturday's game, the Dash (13-10, 56-37) stayed hot with the bats against the K-Tribe with a pair of hits in the first inning. Seth Loman doubled home Jon Gilmore from first base to give Winston a 1-0 lead against T.J. House (2-8).

The Dash pushed two more across in the third on an RBI double by Gilmore and a run-scoring base hit by Ozzie Lewis, who was back in the lineup after serving a three-game suspension. Brandon Short made it 4-0 Winston with an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

House fell victim of his own mistakes and a curious defensive play in the fifth inning. After Lewis led off with a double, Jose Martinez grounded a ball to shortstop Juan Diaz. Instead of going for the sure out at first base, Diaz tried to catch Lewis at third, but his throw was off-target and both runners were safe at the corners. Luis Sierra hit a sacrifice fly to score Lewis before Kyle Shelton reached on a fielder's choice.

After Mike Richard singled, Aaron Holbert summoned Brian Grening from the bullpen to face Brandon Short. The centerfielder blasted the first pitch he saw over left fielder Bo Greenwell's head for a double, scoring both Shelton and Richard to put the Dash on top 7-0.

While Winston-Salem's offense was bashing House and Grening, Stephen Sauer was steadily disposing of the K-Tribe's hitters. He induced double plays in each of the first three innings and had faced the minimum through four. One of his few mistakes on the night came with two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Nate Recknagel took a 3-1 offering and sent it over the center field batter's eye for a three-run home run to get Kinston (8-14, 44-48) on the board.

Sauer (6-6) continued to master the Indians batters in the sixth and seventh, and came back out to start the eighth. After the first three batters reached, Joe McEwing called upon Tyson Corley to come in with the bases loaded and nobody out. Corley first got Chun Chen to hit a light tapper to the mound for a 1-2 force out at home. Doug Pickens followed with a chopper up the middle that went for a 6-4-3, inning-ending double play.

The twin killing was one of many sparkling plays turned by the Dash defense on the night. Gilmore made several outstanding plays at third base, including a diving backhanded stop to go along and a long throw to nab Kyle Bellows in the seventh inning. Most of the defensive work was done by the infield, as the combination of Sauer and Corley recorded 19 outs on the ground compared to just two fly ball outs.

Corley worked a perfect ninth to nail down his third save. He preserved the win for Sauer, who allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings. House took the loss, giving up all seven runs (six earned) in 4.2 innings.

Eight of the nine Winston-Salem starters collected at least one hit. Short led the offense with a 2 for 4 night and three RBI. Gilmore went 1 for 2 with three walks, an RBI and two runs scored.

The series continues on Tuesday night when RHP Terry Doyle (5-4, 3.31) opposes RHP Joe Gardner (7-4, 2.71). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, July 22 for a series against the Potomac Nationals.
