Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

James Avery was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week during the period from July 12-18. The right-hander threw eight innings of shutout baseball at Myrtle Beach July 16. In that start, he didn't give up a run and allowed only two hits while striking out six. He picked up his fifth win of the season. Avery is the first Hillcat to win Pitcher of the Week this season.

His eight-inning outing was the longest of the season for Avery, and the longest by a Hillcat in 2010. Avery missed most of last season after Tommy John surgery. He made his 2010 debut with the Hillcats in May. On June 1 he picked up his first win since the surgery after throwing 5.1 shutout innings.

He's won four of his last six outings in Lynchburg and three of his last four. He's given up a combined three earned runs in his last four starts (1.12 ERA) and struck out 21.

No Hillcats pitcher has been honored with the award so far this season. The last Lynchburg pitcher to do it was Matt McSwain from August 17-23. Rudy Owens also won the award from August 3-9 last season. Devin Mesoraco won Carolina League Player of the Week earlier this season.

The Hillcats begin a seven-game homestand tonight against Frederick at 7:05. Avery's next scheduled start will be Thursday when Lynchburg opens up a four-game set with the Salem Red Sox, also at 7:05 p.m. Gates for both games open at 6 p.m.
