Potomac Nationals News Release

The Potomac bats stayed hot as the P-Nats smashed the Salem Red Sox 13-0 at Pfitzner Stadium Monday. Carolina League Player of the Week Tyler Moore was 4-5 with three doubles, five RBI and his 13th homer of the season. Adrian Alaniz dominated in six scoreless innings, yielding just three hits, walking one batter and striking out four.

Alaniz wasn't even suppose to start the game today. The right-hander was originally slated to 'piggy back' off major-league rehab Jordan Zimmermann. But just before game time Zimmermann, who was set to make his fourth start for the P-Nats, was scratched with tightness in his neck.

Potomac's offense got started early against Brock Huntzinger, who a week ago today got the victory in a complete game performance against Potomac. He sported 0.76 ERA in four starts against the Nationals coming into tonight. Fresh off bereavement leave, Mike Burgess smoked an RBI-single to score Josh Johnson with two out. Then Moore ripped an RBI double to deep left-center that scored Burgess, who just beat a tag from Tim Federowicz to increase the P-Nats' lead to 2-0.

Moore, who last week belted seven extra-base hits in 18 at-bats over five games, hit a solo home run over the batters eye in dead center field. Moore's 13th shot of the year put Potomac up 3-0 after four innings. Jose Lozada hit his second homer in as many games in the fifth on a ball down the right-field line that just stayed fair. That gave the P-Nats a 4-0 lead. Huntziner completed five innings, yielding four runs and five hits.

Potomac kept the offense rolling against Salem reliever Kyle Fernandes in the sixth. Derek Norris and Burgess hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning. Moore again delivered a smashing a double down the left-field line to score Norris and Burgess and increase the lead to 6-0 for Potomac. Bill Rhinehart then hit a two-run homer off the foul pole down the right-field line, opening up the game to 8-0. Rhinehart has homered in three consecutive games for Potomac.

During the top of the seventh, there was a delay due to a very short but heavy rainfall. The delay was 38 minutes.

The P-Nats bats weren't quite done yet. Off Salem reliever Zach Hammes, Potomac struck for five runs in the seventh. Five of his first six batters reached via three singles, an error and a walk, which plated one and left the bases loaded. After a strikeout, the P-Nats got four consecutive singles to increase the lead to 13-0.

Pat McCoy pitched two scoreless to end the game for Potomac as they cruised to their biggest win of the year.

The win was the fourth in a row for Potomac, which is their longest streak of the year. The P-Nats try to make it five in a row tomorrow against the Red Sox at 7:03 p.m. Newly promoted left-hander Danny Rosenbaum will get the call for the P-Nats. The 22nd-round pick in 2009 was a South Atlantic League first-half all-star for Hagerstown. The Red Sox will send right-hander Michael Lee to the mound.
