Austin Bruins News Release
A thrilling finish to a fast-paced hockey game was momentous for three reasons: the Austin Bruins (9-4-5) struggling power-play got going, pivotal in the team s first overtime win of the season, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Austin s 2-1 OT win Saturday over the Coulee Region Chill (8-6-3) was huge with three games on the docket this coming week.
The first period saw just 11 combined shots, but the energy was high from the get-go. The Bruins outshot the Chill 7-4, but were 0-for-1 on the power-play and turned away on a few great scoring chances by Coulee Region veteran goalie Adam Carlson (Edina, MN). Bruins rookie goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) didn t see a lot of shots, but had to be good when called upon.
The high-flying pace carried over to the second period, with several end-to-end rushes and hard hits, but no scoring. Kielly and Carlson got into a groove, exchanging big save for bigger save to keep the game 0-0 going into the third.
Coulee Region grabbed the lead at 2:21 of the third, when Garrett Riebling (Chanhassen, MN) banked a puck off the post and tapped in his own rebound for the game s first goal. Less than a minute later, the Bruins power-play scored seven seconds into a man-advantage when Pat Lauderdale (Eden Prairie, MN) snuck a tap-in across the goal line from the doorstep.
The two teams exchanged chances throughout the remaining 16:44 of scoreless play leading to overtime, and at 1:08 of the extra period, Ian Scheid (Coon Rapids, MN) blasted a one-timer off the post and in for the game-winner. It was the first Bruins win in overtime or a shootout in six tries this season, and snapped a three-game losing streak. Kielly stopped 21 shots in his fifth win of the season, while Carlson saved 25 in the loss.
Austin continues its stretch of five games in nine days, with three this week against the Janesville Jets. Tuesday night is Military Appreciation Night at Riverside Arena when the Bruins and Jets face-off at 7:05pm in Austin. The Bruins then travel to Janesville for games Friday and Saturday night. All three games can be seen on fasthockey.com.
