Austin FC Adds Four in MLS Expansion Draft

Austin, Texas (December 15, 2020) ‚ - ‚ Austin FC, the 27th Club in Major League Soccer (MLS), added today four (4) new players via the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft. The Club selected San Jose Earthquakes forward Danny Hoesen with the first pick, followed by New York Red Bulls midfielder Jared Stroud, Nashville SC goalkeeper Brady Scott and LA Galaxy midfielder and U.S. international Joe Corona with the second, third and fourth picks, respectively. Austin traded its fifth and final pick, Kamal Miller, to the Montreal Impact for for $225,000 in General Allocation Money ("GAM"), the 11th pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, and $50,000 in conditional GAM.

"We are pleased with our selections during today's Expansion Draft," commented Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. "We acquired a dynamic group of players who are excited about joining the Club and have played significant minutes in relevant clubs and youth and senior national teams around the world."

Hoesen (pronounced "Ho-son") joins Austin FC from the San Jose Earthquakes, where he spent the last three (3) seasons (2017-20), making 110 appearances (68 starts), while adding 26 goals and 12 assists across competitions. The Dutch-Moroccan player has extensive experience in Europe, beginning his career in the Dutch Second Division with Fortuna Sittard, before joining English side Fulham FC in 2008 at the age of 17. While playing for Fulham's U-23's, he spent time on loan with HJK Helsinki of the Finnish first division in 2010, helping the club win the league title. Hoesen later joined his former club Fortuna Sittard (2011-12) before returning to England in 2012 where he registered four (4) goals in 10 total appearances for Fulham's youth side.

The native of Heerlen, Netherlands spent the 2012-14 seasons with Ajax and Ajax II in his home country, where he made 44 appearances across all competitions with the senior team, scoring 13 goals and adding six (6) assists. Notably, Hoesen won the 2012-13 league title and the 2013 Johan Cruyff Shield with Ajax, while also making UEFA Champions League appearances against powerhouses Real Madrid C.F., Borussia Dortmund, FC Barcelona and AC Milan, scoring goals against Dortmund and Barcelona. Hoesen spent the 2014 season in Greece playing for First Division side PAOK Football Club, before joining Dutch side FC Groningen in the 2014-15 season, where made 73 appearances (43 starts) and logged 14 goals. Internationally, Hoesen made two (2) appearances with the Netherlands team that participated in the U-21 UEFA Championship in 2013 in Israel.

Stroud (pronounced "Stro-wd"), Austin FC's second selection, was signed to an MLS contract with the New York Red Bulls in January of 2020 and went on to make 20 regular season appearances (11 starts) while contributing two (2) assists. The Chester, New Jersey, native spent the 2019 season with the New York Red Bulls II, where he was named to the 2019 USL Championship All-League First Team after helping NYRB II make its fifth consecutive playoff berth with a team-leading 15 goals and nine (9) assists in 34 matches.

In 2018, Stroud played in 32 matches (22 starts) with NYRB II, scoring seven (7) goals and adding 11 assists to help Red Bulls II to make the playoffs. A Colgate men's soccer standout, Stroud was a three-time All-Patriot League pick and two-time All-Region selection.

With the third pick in the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft, Austin FC selected goalkeeper Brady Scott (pronounced "Ska-HT") from Nashville SC, who joins Austin after playing two (2) matches on loan with USL Championship side Sacramento Republic in 2020. Prior to his USL stint, Scott spent the 2017-2020 seasons with German side FC Köln II, where he made 29 appearances in net record five (5) shutouts. The 21-year-old made three appearances for FC Köln's U-19 squad, earning two (2) shutouts in three (3) matches played.

At the youth international level, Scott has distinguished himself as a youth U.S National Team goalkeeper, starting on the team that won the 2019 Concacaf U-20 Championship. Scott recorded three (3) shutouts in the tournament, two (2) in the qualifying stage (Costa Rica, Honduras) and one (1) more during the final against Mexico to clinch the title. Scott's performance earned him a spot on the tournament's Best XI Team. Scot also earned the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper at the Concacaf U-20 Championship.

With the fourth and last pick, Austin FC selected midfielder Joe Corona (pronounced "Co-ROW-na") from LA Galaxy. The 30-year-old U.S. Men's National Team veteran joins Austin FC after spending the 2019-20 seasons with the Californian side where he made 40 starts in 49 games played, scoring two (2) goals and adding three (3) assists across competitions, including MLS league play, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Concacaf Leagues Cup. Prior to joining LA Galaxy, Corona enjoyed a successful career with Liga MX side Club Tijuana, where he captured the 2012-13 Apertura title. Corona also spent time with Club América, Dorados de Sinaloa and C.D. Veracruz between 2013-2019, where he logged a combined 206 starts in 302 matches played across competitions, including Copa MX, Concacaf Leagues Cup, Concacaf Champions League, and CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores.

Internationally, Corona has earned 26 U.S. Men's National Team appearances (15 starts) across Olympic Qualifying for London 2012, Concacaf Gold Cup (USA 2013, 2015, 2017), and FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches, tallying seven (7) goals.

Additionally, Austin FC traded its fifth MSL Expansion Draft pick, center back Kamal Miller, to the Montreal Impact. In exchange, Austin FC received $225,000 of GAM and Montreal's First Round Draft Pick (11th overall) in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.
