SEA DOGS FALL IN HOME RUN DERBYPortland lost last night, 4-3 to the Bowie Baysox behind four combined home runs. Meidroth put Portland on the board first in the top of the third with a two-run blast to left field. With his fifth homer of the season, Portland led 2-0. Billy Cook responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to even the score at two. Bowie took 4-2 the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run home run from Joseph Rosa. Hickey launched a solo home run to right center field in the top of the sixth to record his twelfth homer of the season and put Portland within one but Bowie led, 4-3.

BULLPEN WAS STRONGLast night, Christopher Troye, Brendan Cellucci, Ryan Zeferjahn, and Theo Denlinger combined for 4.0 shutout innings in relief. Zeferjahn struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

STRONG DAY AT THE PLATE DESPITE LOSS Chase Meidroth and Nathan Hickey both blasted homers while Phillip Sikes and Nick Yorke and Corey Rosier all recorded mutli-hit days at the plate in yesterday's loss.

BACK IN SECOND PLACE With another loss, the Sea Dogs are in second place of the Northeast Division of the Eastern League, 0.5 game behind the Somerset Patriots. The Reading Fightin Phils are in third place, 2.0 games behind the Patriots while the Binghamton Rumble Ponies are in fourth place, 2.5 games out of first. Portland's next opponent, the Hartford Yard Goats, are 4.0 games behind the Sea Dogs. The Baysox are in fourth place in the Southwest Division, 2.0 games behind the first place Richmond Flying Squirrels.

CLOSING THE BOOK ON JULY Through 24 games in July, the Sea Dogs went 13-11 and hit .244 with 43 doubles, seven triples and 27 home runs. Portland had a .323 OBP with a .740 OPS. On the mound, pitchers owned a 4.27 ERA with 256 strikeouts in 208.2 innings.

GAMBRELL NAMED EASTERN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEKRHP Grant Gambrell has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. He tossed seven scoreless innings holding the Richmond Flying Squirrels to three hits and one walk while striking out eight in a 12-0 Sea Dogs victory on Friday, July 28th. Gambrell joined the Sea Dogs on May 18th from High-A Greenville. In 12 starts for the Sea Dogs, he has produced a 4-2 record with a 3.12 ERA and ranks second on the team with 72 strikeouts in 69.1 innings.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY August 5, 2012 - After being traded at the July 31st deadline for former Sea Dogs Lars Anderson, knuckleballer Steven Wright makes his lone Sea Dogs appearance, going six innings on 5 hits and one run to earn the win...Wright was traded by Cleveland with the Akron Aeros in town on July 31st...Andrew Bailey tossed one inning in a MLB Rehab appearance.

PITCHING PREVIEWRHP Chih-Jung Liu will take the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight in Bowie. His last outing was July 30 at Richmond. Against the Flying Squirrels, he tossed 1.2 innings allowing five runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two. It was his shortest outing of the year. Liu has not faced the Baysox.
