Last time out...

The Florence Freedom (34-45) out-hit the Joliet Slammers (31-50) on Sunday night but fell in 10 innings to Joliet by a score of 3-2. The Slammers got on the board in the first on a Matt Weaver two-run home run. Jorge Marban tossed five innings of two-run ball, walking three and striking out seven in a no-decision. Florence cut the Joliet lead in half in the fifth on a RBI double by Adam Taylor. Zak Blair tripled to lead-off the sixth and Sam Eberle singled him home to tie the game. Everything went wrong in the bottom of the 10 th. Ed Kohout (2-3) walked Adam Lewis with one out and the Freedom brought in Chris Squires. Grant DeBruin singled off Squires, putting runners at first and second with one away. Then with two away, Squires uncorked a wild pitch to move both runners up. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Squires threw another wild pitch, allowing the winning run to score.

For Starters...

2014 Frontier League Mid-Season All-Star Chuck Weaver is making his 15th start of the season tonight for the Freedom. He is coming off a complete game, seven-inning shutout of the Traverse City Beach Bums on August 13. Weaver retired the final 17 batters he faced and gave up only one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters in the 2-0 win. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.

Hit man...

Infielder Rolando Gomez is the Freedom's newest signing and he's hit safely in all seven of the games he's played in so far for Florence. Gomez is currently 8-23 with a home run.

Pitching dominates...

The Freedom have surrendered three or fewer runs in seven of their past nine games with three shutouts mixed in.

No doubles...offense...

The Freedom's 102 doubles as a team is the fewest in the Frontier League. This has been a big factor in their offense ranking last in runs scored as well with 307.

Home is where the wins are...

Despite sitting at 11 games under .500, the Freedom have been a solid team at home, posting a record of 25-22 so far this season. This includes a two-game sweep of Windy City at home earlier this year.

Five is the magic number...

When the Freedom score five or more runs in a game they have a record of 20-9 this season.

Excellent Eberle...

Sam Eberle continues to lead the Freedom in nearly offensive category. He has a team-leading: .331 batting average, 45 runs scored, 15 doubles, 37 RBI, 127 total bases, 53 walks, .450 OBP, .483 SLG and a .933 OPS. Eberle is second on the team in home runs with seven behind Rob Kelly (eight).

Over the last 10...

Zak Blair is on fire recently for the Freedom, posting a batting average of .469 (15-32) over the past 10 games with six runs scored and five RBI. The Freedom's offense overall has been much-improved in recent games with a team batting average of .274 over the past 10 contests with 7 home runs and 36 RBI.

Tonight's Special Jersey Number...

Chance Ross is wearing the #61 jersey tonight. The jersey will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky.
