Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

Williamsport's 9-7 back-and-forth loss Tuesday night to Auburn handed the Doubledays the division and a playoff berth.

The game saw five different lead changes, with Jiandido Tromp and Cameron Perkins hitting especially well. Tromp went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double. Perkins finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.

Both teams also hit exceptionally well with runners in scoring position. Auburn went 7-for-16 (.438), Williamsport hit 6-for-10 (.600).

Auburn took an early two-run lead in the first off of Cutters starter Jordan Guth, who made his first start since a July 22nd injury. But Williamsport answered in the bottom of the inning when Tromp had an RBI-double and scored on a Perkins groundout.

The Crosscutters then took their first lead in the third when Chris Serritella plated Perkins on a groundball single up the middle.

The Doubledays answered immediately in the fourth with a three run frame to take a 5-3 lead off of Andre Kinder.

Williamsport and Auburn curiously had their respective offenses shut down in the middle innings. The Cutters had ten straight retired in a row by Ronald Pena, while Chris Nichols and Matt Sisto combined to shut down ten straight Doubledays.

Poor defense in the seventh by Auburn broke the stalemate. After Kevin Quaranto reached on a dropped fly ball, he was singled home by Gustavo Gonzalez. After a Roman Quinn infield single, Tromp hit a scorcher into left field to score Gonzalez and tie the game. One batter later, Perkins made it 7-5 with a two-run double to left. Left fielder Estarlin Martinez struggled getting the ball out of the corner.

Sisto then got in a jam in the eighth. Closer Geoff Broussard was brought in with two outs and runners at second and third. His first pitch was sent right back up the middle by Spencer Kieboom to tie the game 7-7.

Broussard ran into more trouble in the ninth, putting runners at the corners with one out. A sharp grounder by Brandon Miller was mishandled by Mitch Walding, and Tony Renda scored the eventual game-winning run.

Auburn added one more run later in the inning as Williamsport was unable to rally despite a leadoff hit by pitch to Quinn.

The loss was Broussard's first of the year as Williamsport drops to 29-46 on the year. Auburn will play the loser of Tri-City and Hudson Valley on Wednesday.

Williamsport plays the season finale Wednesday at 7:05 against Auburn. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com.
