Lowell Spinners News Release

BROOKLYN, NY. - The Lowell Spinners put the skids on a five-game losing streak and embraced the role of potential spoiler, putting the champagne on ice for the Brooklyn Cyclones by exploding for 13 hits in a convincing win Tuesday night at MCU Park, 9-1.

Lowell (35-50) jumped out to an early lead for the second consecutive night, scoring a pair of first inning runs. Mike Miller led off the game with a single, advancing to third when Mookie Betts reached on a throwing error by Brooklyn starter Gabriel Ynoa, who's attempt to force Miller went wild. A Deven Marrero groundout scored Miller and moved Betts to second and Jake Davies brought him home with a single to left to put the Spinners up, 2-0.

Brooklyn (45-30) cut the score in half in the fifth inning when Juan Gamboa reached on a lead-off walk. A Dimas Ponce infield single moved Gamboa to second and a walk to Nelfi Zapata loaded the bases. Justin Haley buckled down, striking out Brandan Nimmo, but Phillip Evans singled up the middle. Gamboa scored but Aneury Tavarez cut down Ponce at the plate to preserve the 2-1 lead.

With Ynoa out of the game, the Spinners went to work on the Cyclone bullpen. Marrero led off the sixth with a single and Davies followed with a single of his own. Nick Moore sacrificed both men into scoring position and Tavarez plated both with a single to center, giving the Spinners a 4-1 lead.

Lowell added to the lead in the seventh with a one-out single by Miller getting things started. After a Betts strikeout, Marrero doubled to left, scoring Miller. The Cyclones appeared to be out of the inning, but a third strike to Davies got past Zapata, allowing Davies to reach and Marrero to advance to third. Moore made the passed ball hurt, as he singled to right to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Spinners truly put the game out of reach in the eighth, adding three runs on a two-run home run by Tim Roberson, his second of the season, and an RBI double by Betts for a 9-1 lead they would not relinquish.

After having his Spinners' debut washed out Friday night, Austin Maddox was dazzling in his Spinners' debut. After pitching around a pair of first inning hits, Maddox settled in for three scoreless innings, striking out four. Justin Haley, making his first appearance out of the bullpen, was rewarded with the win. He struggled with control, walking three, but got out of trouble (with an assist from Tavarez), allowing just the one run on two hits, striking out two. Mike Augliera was perhaps even better than Maddox, striking out three while allowing just two hits in his 3.1 innings of relief, his first appearance out of the pen. Augliera extended his scoreless streak to 9.1 innings to end his first professional season, while Tyler Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win.

The Lowell offense erupted for 13 hits as every member of the line-up picked up at least one hit. Miller set the offense, reaching base in three of his five trips to the plate, scoring three runs, while Marrero and Davies each added two hits, as did Kevin Heller.

Lowell looks to continue to play the role of spoiler in the 2012 season finale Wednesday night. Pat Light will pitch in front of family in friends as he wraps up his professional debut and the Spinners look to keep the Cyclones, who's Magic Number is one, out of the playoffs with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
