Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Sam Kimmel gave Aberdeen a two-run lead with a grand slam home run in the fifth inning and the Ironbirds bullpen shut down the Lake Monsters for the second straight night for a 7-5 New York-Penn League victory over Vermont Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont led 5-3 when Aberdeen loaded the bases off reliever Tyler Vail on a walk, single and hit batter with one out in the fifth. Vail was able to strikeout Joel Hutter for the second out, but Kimmel wrapped a 3-1 pitch around the rightfield foul pole for the grand slam to give the Ironbirds the lead. It was the 40th homer allowed by Vermont pitchers this season and the second grand slam.ÃÂ
The Lake Monsters had spotted the Ironbirds a 3-0 lead as Aberdeen scored three times in the top of the first off starter Nolan Sanburn on a two-run double from Hutter and RBI single from Hector Veloz. Vermont tied the game in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own, including a Reynaldo Mateo two-run single.
A Bruce Maxwell RBI single and Matt Olson sacrifice fly in the third gave Vermont a 5-3 lead, but the Lake Monsters were held hitless after a Mateo single to open the fourth. After Aberdeen relievers retired the final 16 Vermont batters in Monday's 3-2 Ironbirds win, the Lake Monsters only base runners over the final five innings came on two walks in the fifth and a fielding error to leadoff the eighth inning.
Alexander Santana, making his first appearance for the Ironbirds after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League, allowed just one hit with three strikeouts over four relief innings for the win, while Jose Nivar and Janser Severino both had one strikeout in one scoreless inning for Aberdeen (28-47). Vail (3-4) allowed four runs on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings of relief to take the loss, while Deyvi Jimenez had four strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
Mateo was 2-for-4 with the two-run single for Vermont and Brett Vertigan was 0-for-5 to snap his 17-game hitting streak, the fourth longest hit streak in Lake Monsters history.
Vermont (32-43) will wrap up the 2012 season on Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field against Aberdeen beginning at 6:05 pm with the Lake Monsters home jerseys being auctioned off during the game.
