Attack Shooting Gallery Can't Solve Prosvetov and the Spirit
November 25, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Bears were back in action Sunday afternoon, looking to avenge back to back loses at the hands of the London Knights and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Saginaw came to town looking to build upon their solid start to the year, currently sitting 2nd place in the West Division.
The first period got underway with the Spirit firing a fury of shots towards Attack netminder Mack Guzda, but Guzda turned them all away. A big hit from Griffin Wilson then seemed to spark the Attack, as they caught back up in the shots category, and strung together a few strong offensive zone shifts.
9 minutes into the frame the Spirit got out to a 1-0 lead, as captain Damien Giroux banked the puck off of a sliding Trent Bourque, and the puck slid between Guzda's legs.
Brady Lyle got sent to the box for holding at exactly the 10 minute mark, but the Attack successfully killed off the penalty.
Owen Sound got their first powerplay with two and a half minutes to play in the period, but could not beat Sarnia's netminder Ivan Prosvetov.
Mark McDade shots on goal following the 1st were Attack 10 and Spirit 9.
The Attack's line of Dudas-Suzuki-Groulx came out flying to start the 2nd, and nearly capitalized on a chance in close.
Trent Bourque got called for slashing at 15:21 but luckily Bode Wilde of the Spirit evened things up with slashing penalty 18 seconds after. 4-on-4 solved nothing however, as neither team could take advantage of the open ice.
Shortly after 4-on-4 expired, Carter Robertson was forced to report to the sin-bin for tripping. Fortunately, the Attack killed it off without much of a threat from the Spirit.
2 breakaways, 1 from Groulx and 1 from Dudas, solved nothing, as Prosvetov stood on his head.
The Attack weren't able to bury one on their next powerplay either, despite several chances. A few minutes later we headed to 4-on-4 hockey as Nick Suzuki was tripped, but then Zach Roberts got called for roughing.
The Attack had another powerplay opportunity with just under 4 minutes to play in the period, but again were unable to finish on one of their many shots.
Mark McDade shots at the end of 2 were 20-6 for the Attack, making the 30-15 for the game.
Mack Guzda made an unbelievable save to open the 3rd period, reaching back behind him to save the day. However just about a minute later the Spirit squeaked a point shot through traffic, making the score 2-0 Saginaw.
Daylon Groulx got called for tripping shortly after the goal, but fortunately the guys were able to kill the penalty.
8 minutes into the frame, Saginaw rookie Cole Perfetti placed a shot perfectly over Guzda's shoulder, making the score 3-0.
Despite numerous chances, the Attack were unable to catch a break, and the score ended 3-0 Saginaw.
Fun fact courtesy of Fred Wallace, this game marked the first time that the Saginaw franchise has shutout the Owen Sound franchise since January 21st 1990, when Ron Bertrand of the Centennials blanked the Platers.
The Mark McDade shots on goal finished a whopping 48-27 in favour of the Attack.
Tonight's Hatten Home Hardware Hardest Working Player, as chosen by the fans, was awarded to Markus Phillips. Fans be sure to send in your vote on Twitter during the 3rd period of every Owen Sound Attack game.
Tonight's 1st star, undoubtedly, was goalie Ivan Prosvetov for the Spirit, with a remarkable 48 save shutout. Mason Millman won 2nd star honours with 2 assists in the game. Mack Guzda won 3rd star, with 24 saves including several spectacular efforts!
The Attack will be on the road this Wednesday and Thursday, but will return to the Bayshore next Saturday night to take on the Barrie Colts. The game will be this season's Toonies for Toys night.
Tickets for next Saturday's Toonies For Toys game can be purchased at the MacVicar & McComb ReMax Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com or at 519.371.7452.
