Oshawa Generals News Release
The Oshawa Generals capped off their weekend at home this afternoon against the Sarnia Sting at the Tribute Communities Centre. The Gens came into the contest with a 15-7-2-0 record after extending their winning streak to five straight games with another 2-point performance against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday. Looking to end the weekend on a high note and add to their streak, the Gens aimed to take down the Sting this afternoon in front of the home town crowd.
1st Period:
The game began with the Gens getting a few good looks on the Sting net before both teams took an early roughing penalty to put the play at 4-on-4. Sarnia got several shots on net during the 4-on-4 play, but Generals goaltender Kyle Keyser stood tall to deny them. Back at 5-on-5, Oshawa took a penalty for interference to give Sarnia the first powerplay of the game. While the Sting hit the post on the opportunity, the Gens were able to hold them off with a couple of amazing stops from Keyser. With nine minutes remaining in the period, the Sting got called for their first penalty of the game to give the Gens powerplay a chance. During the man advantage, the Sting managed to get a shorthanded breakaway that Keyser shut down with a big save. At even strength, Jack Studnicka had a quality chance on a wraparound that nearly beat the Sting's goaltender but hit the side of the net. With just under two minutes left in the period, the Gens got called for a tripping penalty to put them down a man. However, with a strong effort on the penalty kill, Oshawa was rewarded with a shorthanded goal by Eric Henderson who drove the net hard to bury a loose puck in the crease. With the Sting still on the powerplay after the goal, they were able to answer with a tally of their own to tie the game at 1-1 to head into the first intermission.
2nd Period:
To open the second, the Gens had a quality chance on a breakaway from Dylan Robinson that was turned away by Sting netminder Ethan Langevin. After the chance, both teams got called for roughing penalties to put the play at 4-on-4. Making the most of the extra room on the ice, the Gens connected on a goal with Mitchell Brewer feeding Serron Noel in front of the net who tipped the puck past the Sting. Oshawa's lead didn't last for long, as Sarnia shot a puck top corner behind the Gens to tie the game at 2-2 just a minute later. With eleven minutes left in the period, a Sarnia hit resulted in a fight between Danil Antropov and Kelton Hatcher, with Antropov getting an extra two minutes for instigating. The Sting were able to capitalize on the resulting powerplay, with Adam Ruzicka shooting one in from the slot to put Sarnia ahead 3-2. Taking a tripping penalty with five minutes left in the period, the Gens had to kill off another penalty but answered the call with a strong PK effort. With no goals to end the period, the Gens went into the third trailing 3-2.
3rd Period:
The Gens came out hungry for a goal, with Serron Noel ripping a puck off the crossbar to nearly tie the game. After the chance, Keyser continued his amazing play early in the period, stopping a barrage of shots from Sarnia. Halfway through the period, Gens forward Kyle MacLean had a dangerous scoring chance in which he nearly wrapped the puck in after speeding around the back of the Sting net. Pushing for the tying goal, Oshawa generated several minutes of high-pressure play in the offensive zone after the ten-minute mark. With six minutes left in the period, the Gens drew a penalty from the Sting to give them a powerplay. After going unsuccessful on the PP, the Gens pulled their goalie with just under two minutes left to give them an extra man. While they came close to potting one off a scramble play in front of the net in the dying seconds, the Gens couldn't get the tying goal and fell 3-2 to the Sting.
After a tough loss tonight, the Gens will look to get back to their winning ways next weekend when the team travels to Guelph to face off against the Storm on Friday. The Gens then return home for a back-to-back against the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday and the Windsor Spitfires on Sunday.
