Attack Hang on to End Weekend with Win over Firebirds

December 5, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

It was a hectic final minute of the game, but the Owen Sound Attack held their ground to earn a big 3-2 win over the visiting Flint Firebirds Sunday afternoon at the Bayshore.

Owen Sound has developed a reputation for strong starts while within the confines of the Bayshore, and continued that trend again. It was a great rush up ice by Cedrick Guindon as he showed his good speed and puck protection, carrying the puck into the Flint end, before finding William Portokalis in the high slot. Portokalis would coral the puck, before firing a wrist shot past the Firebirds net minder and giving the Attack an early lead.

Owen Sound, who jumped out to a lead Saturday night as well, kept up the pressure this afternoon throughout the opening frame, as they would finish 19 shots after the first 20 minutes of play, and held the 1-0 lead into the second.

Much like Saturday, Flint would find the scoreboard early in the second, with Riley Piercey wiring a shot top corner, just over five minutes in, to even the score at one's. Flint would carry that momentum for much of the second period, as it was their turn to fire close to 20 shots on net, but some solid goaltending by Nick Chenard kept the game tied.

Before the period's buzzer sounded, rookie Colby Barlow would again display his great hand-eye, as he deftly deflected a Deni Goure shot over the net minders shoulder to regain the Attack's lead with under five minutes in the period. Barlow would add a second, just after an Attack power play ended to provide some insurance just before the 10 minute mark of the third.

Flint for their credit would ramp up the pressure as they trailed by a pair late in the game, but some strong team defence and goaltending from Owen Sound kept the Firebirds at bay. It was with under seven minutes to play, when Flint would cut the lead to one, as the nerves picked up from the Attack faithful.

A few close chances had the fans on edge, but Chenard stood tall in net as Owen Sound held on for a big 3-2 win.

The Attack now hit the road for their longest road trip thus far of the season, as they meet the Spitfire in Windsor Wednesday night, before crossing the border for another weekend double header with Flint next Friday and Saturday. Fans can catch the action on RogersTV and OHL Live, with the game Friday Dec. 10th being a free preview!
